Bovines in Line

It's MPR day at the State Fair! If you go, be aware that fun MPR - related things are happening at the booth, at Carousel Park and the grandstand.
Take a look at the schedule! I wish I could be there to hear Jeff Horwich and the Smarts at the MPR NewsQ tent at 10, 1 and 3.

Our Radio Heartland listener-photo essay on the Minnesota State Fair continues with these shots of cows from Steve, Darcy and me. We all were drawn to cows in linear formation. Note that they are (almost) all facing the same direction.
I guess the breeze was pretty much from the left that day!

I would title these shots "All Aboard", "Chorus Line" and "High Hips".
How about you?

Here's the Group Shot naming project as it stands today. A few more people in the photo contacted me with permission to post their names. And I also heard from two who were at the show but didn't make it into the picture, though they wish they'd stuck around for it.

And if you have three pictures you took at the State Fair that you'd like to share, send them to the very same address.
I'll post 3 each day between now and Labor Day.

I just turned on my computer to hear Dale say "hope you both have a wonderful time..." after Anna Bjor-something. Was that for me and Marianne, Norwegian foreigh exchange student? If so, thank you so much...will catch it at work at 11.

A welcoming party will be at the Duluth airport tonight for her 11:20 arrival...care package includes gjetost and wasa crackers...

Dale, I will tell her this is indeed how it is in Minnesota all the time....in our dreams.

Love the cow photos!

again, great photos - thanks! no clever titles from me so early in the morning.
Welcome to the US to Cynthia's guest from Norge!

out to milk and hoping to find a few ripe tomatoes in the garden today for dinner guests tonight. trying to make the dinner totally from our farm - except for the salmon - taters w/ leeks; sliced cucumbers; caprese salad w/ our maters, basil and mozzarella; and tapioca pudding topped w/ cajeta (well, the tapioca pearls aren't from us either). thank you beautiful Blackhoof soil and Dream, Dodger, and Alba!
and good day to All.

Good morning, everyone,

I'm enjoying all the fair pictures. Darcy, all yours are great, especially the quilts. Kate, I love your chicken of many colors. How was Trombone Shorty? Sorry I had to miss that.

Kitty Isis is telling me it's time to feed her. And she rules.

Have a great day at the fair today.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Cynthia, the first part of the first hour was indeed for you and your Norwegian exchange student. I started with a song by Bill Booth, an American who moved to Norway and established his musical career there. And then we followed Bill Booth with Norwegian fiddler Annbjorg Lien.

How nice of you to take a welcoming committee to the airport. I'm sure Marianne will feel the warmth!

Wow! I feel so honored that you used one of my photos! Hmm...titles..."Half Asleep," "One of these things is not like the other" (Sesame Street Reference), and "Does this black spot make my butt look fat?"

Have a wonderful day, Heartlanders!

In the group photo I am kind of like one of the cows in the chorus like photo, I'm facing in the wrong direction. I'm afraid that cow and I might have a similar problem with proper orientation.

Each of the cows in the chorus line has a handler, but in our group photo I guess we just have one handler if we think of Dale as our handler. Of course Dale isn't really a handler, I guess I would say he is our gracious host, but he might need to take a little action to keep us "in line" once in a while.

Thanks for the show! I was at the fair last night and stopped by the MPR booth and got to talk to Gus for a bit. Hes a cool guy, He was telling me about growing up on the radio, and doing the Turkey calls. He told me also about doing the Station IDS when he was 4. Nice kid indeed

Holstein Rorschach is my lone suggestion.

Happy long weekend everyone!

Morning Heartlanders -- love the cow photos. There is never enough cow petting for me at the fair. In the cow barn, it's a little daunting to see those big behinds(although it doesn't always stop me). But my daughter and I got to pet several baby cows in the MoB barn, so we're good for the next year or so!

Have a great weekend all!

Thanks, Aaron. Yes, Gus is a cool guy indeed.
Our Labor Day weekend will involve helping him move back to college for his sophomore year. It's been great having him at home for the summer - we'll miss him terribly. I'm sure there are many parents feeling the same thing right about now.

Good Morning RH,

The lofty intentions of getting to the fair, bright and early, were trumped by the need for sleep. Besides, who in their right mind wants to miss the DC show when they have a day off? We'll be sure to take in some of the MPR events when we do get there- thanks for the schedule, Dale!

I traditionally get separated from my group at the fair, at least once or twice. This year I'm off to a great start because I got lost driving to Lora's last night. Wasn't sure of my exit and followed 494E for a good long time. Another 30 miles, I'd have been at Barb's! The thing is - I was taking a different route than I usually do because Lora told me there was a lot of construction. We briefly talked about the other way on phone early out ( I was at Fairmont) and her last words to me were, "If you get stuck in traffic or need more directions, just call!" WELL... I called, but she didn't pick up. When she finally did, she told she was making the bed. Upon arrival, she and her husband were in lounge wear, drinking wine. Draw your own conclusions.

Have a great weekend all. Wish I was there to taste your gourmet cooking Barb!

Hm...

Photo #1: I'm interested in how that one in the middle seems to be investigating the rope whreas the others appear completely docile. I'd call this one, "The Rebel in the Middle."

Photo #2: Uh-oh...my cynicism trigger just kicked in. Can I call this one "The Swimsuit Competition" or would that be horribly offensive to beauty pagent lovers? If so, sorry...

Photo #3: "Mooving Movers"

Cow captions:

ROAD TRIP! ROAD TRIP!
Project Runway
Lean, Clean Milk Machines (I like High Hips much better, though, Dale)

This time of year is always bittersweet; I have to keep telling myself 'I love fall!' or I get too sad about saying goodbye to my brother and the cabin and summer itself. Sorry the melancholy is seeping in to your holiday weekend, Dale.

Regarding Donna's "version" of the "events" of last night... heresay and innuendo. She neglected to mention that the bed I was making was the one she would sleep in. Mom's getting a GPS navigator for Christmas this year.

Donna & Lora - you remind me of me and my daughter. She's absolutely convinced that GPS would make my life much much easier!

morning, all--i got off to a late start today! too busy taking in the rain-washed desert air to come sit at the computer...

have any of you cow fanciers stuck around at the bldg for cow judging? i did once, and was amused at the way the commentator spoke about the cows, noting their attractiveness, their shapely legs, the nice sway in their hips, etc.....sounded JUST like a beauty contest :-)

nice to see all the RHers in the photo--

hey, dale, if i send a photo of utah, will you do a little selection of cowboys-riding-the-range-type songs next week? thx.

Dale, thanks for the homecoming songs -- that was perfect, caught them on rebroadcast. Nice, funky version of Country Roads that I'd never heard.

I wish I could come up with some captions, but y'all are doing well. Darcy, "Does this black spot make my butt look fat?" made me laugh and almost spit out my tea.

Posted by Barbara in Robbinsdale | September 4, 2009 11:41 AM

Kay, the picture of the Chorus Line Bovines was taken while the judge was expounding on the feminine faces of the heifers and we thought, "What the heck makes a heifer's face feminine?" I posed the question on Facebook and my sister in law's sister (my sister in law is one of 4 sisters who grew up on a dairy farm in Iowa; all of whom were 4Her's and Dairy Princess contestants...a couple of them winners) said that it is the length of their eyelashes. I asked her if an ambitious 4Her could put false eyelashes on her cow and she said she had never heard of that, but they do have false tails... Who woulda thought?

Barbara, it is a good day when you can make someone spit out their tea. :)
