Fair Photo-Rama

Posted at 4:50 AM on September 3, 2009 by Dale Connelly (25 Comments)

In the 8 o'clock hour this morning, I'll talk with John Hermanson of the duo Storyhill. Originally from Montana (same as his Storyhill partner Chris Cunningham), John settled in Minnesota and expanded his musical persona to include bands The Hopefuls and Alva Star.

John and Chris continue to work together, touring and hosting their popular summer music weekend in the Rockies, StoryhillFest, and this weekend, they'll add a Minnesota version - StoryhillFest Midwest, being held in Deerwood, Minnesota.

This is a repeat of one hour from last Saturday night's News and Information Service version of Radio Heartland.

Thanks to those who took up the challenge and sent their photos from the State Fair. As a group we have covered the grounds, but no one has seen everything - that's what cameras and friends are for. Here are three examples of the sort of shot Radio Heartlanders have been taking as they wander the Great Get Together.

Kate contributed the Chicken of Many Colors.
Steve sent the Sultan of Sham-Wow
And DanT brought us Caramel Apples Under Glass

But I know you have better names in mind for these engaging images.

And here's the latest on the Group Shot project. I'd like to have permission from each person in the shot before I post their name alongside their picture on the big, bad Internet.

Middle Row: Sherrilee (3rd from right), Linda from St. Paul (West Side) (far right)

If you are in the photo and you'd like me to list your name below, send a permission-granting e-mail to dale@radioheartland.org.
And if you have three pictures you took at the State Fair that you'd like to share, send them to the very same address.
I'll post 3 each day between now and Labor Day.

Kate, Steve and Dan T - you all are great photographers! I especially love the rooster; my husband and I almost missed Storyhill last night because we were enchanted by all the beautiful chickens. Does anyone keep them? Our neighbor (in Mac-Groveland) has a few and I hear it's catching on.

Dale, I see you played my favorite Storyhill song ever, Steady On yesterday - do you have anything else from that duets show? I'd love to hear the one about Stonewall Jackson (I believe it's called "Better Angels"). In lieu of that, I'd take anything Chris n' Johnny, I'm not picky.

Greetings! Those are fun pictures -- what a beautiful chicken! Not as cute as a goat, but still very attractive and colorful.

Not sleeping well, so I'm up early. Have a great day everyone!

hey there - those photos are great! they gather the essence of the Fair - thanks!
Dale - there used to be a Reggae artist called "Eek a Mouse" - have anything by him for Kay and her cat Mina? :-)
and for Cynthia, the Flight of the Bumble(honey)bee?
another beautiful day in Blackhoof. the goats love this weather - cool days/nights - Dodger and Alba were running full tilt yesterday with Spot and Opie. Dreamy never runs anymore - if you saw her udder you'd know why. they don't make sports bras big enough........

Yeah, more fun photos!

Am driving to St. Paul tonight to hit the fair bright and early with Lora. Woo Hoo! Think this will make her 4th time now. (We'll see if we can come up with a few pics of our own.)
If any TB'rs want to mention a CAN'T MISS fair food, I'd love to see them.

Beautiful and sunny up your way? Steady rain here. Recess will be inside, I fear.
First Grade chuckle - a little guy in six-year-old sweetness and sincerity told me he wants my ph.# so I can go in his hot tub.

Donna and Lora, if you haven't tried the chocolate dipped strawberries at Tremblay's in the Coliseum, that would be my first suggestion.
Also, look in the Fine Arts building for an artwork called "These Goats Won't Let Me Sleep". I thought of Barb and Cynthia when I saw it.

Donna, If you like wine you could sample a glass or a flight of wine from Minnesota wineries in the Horticulture building. The wine is for sale in an area that is under the banner of Minnesota Farm Wineries or something like that..

I think they had the chicken area filled with bunnies on Friday and I didn't see any chickens, so I am glad to see Kate's nice picture of the roster.

Thanks for the state fair pics, they capture it so perfectly it's like almost being there. It'll have to do for me this year, just not going to get there in spite of my good intentions!

Is control of my life an illusion if my only choices in it stink? Too early to ponder such things!

Dale, other people's titles aren't automatically better, just different. Such is the subjective nature of art. Go ahead and list me on the photo.

My title suggestions:
Photo #1: Joseph, the Amazing Technicolor Chicken
Photo #2: Cleans Spills, Defies Gravity
Photo #3: Caramel Spirits

And one of my favorite Storyhill songs (can't pick just one fave) that I don't hear terribly often is White Roses.

Hey...someone please take a photo of the "goats won't let me sleep" Love it! When I got my first two goats, they followed me everywhere and stood outside the window bleating at me when I tried to nap...

I have chickens. Not as beautiful as the rooster pictured, but a couple of the roosters (or is it only one now) are colored the same...just much older and one-eyed.

tomorrow I pick up my norwegian exchange student...I have to stay up late to pick her up at the Duluth airport. Do you have something appropriate to begin my day tomorrow morning?

Between the photos folks are sending in and the mini donuts Husband and Daughter brought home (still warm!) yesterday, it's almost like I got to go to the fair this year. Almost. Less sticky, though.

Off to first day of Kindergarten today for Daughter. Whee! Hope everyone has a lovely Thursday,

Haven't been to the State Fair in years... crowd aversion I guess... didn't even make the county fair this year for some reason; just busy. Or lazy perhaps. I grew up being in 4-H and spent every day at the fair or helping my folks with the 'All You Can Drink' Milk Booth or various other booths.
We have chickens now too. Like Cynthia, a couple roosters the same color but rougher looking. And one rooster that can get into the pen every night but not be able to get out in the morning. I don't know... he's just... confused. We have to open the big door to let him out.

My best chicken story; I loaned Theater de la Juene Lune two chickens for a play a few years ago. 'Rita' and her understudy, 'Venus' lived in a room at the theater for 6 weeks. The understudy was never needed and she took it personally. Pecked at Rita whenever she came back from the stage.

Thanks for the song! Miss S is ready, dressed, backpacked filled and now we're off for first-day-of school pictures on the steps. She thought it was pretty cool to hear her name on the radio (or computer, in our case). Of course now I'm going to be humming Kindergarten Wall all day at work, but it's a small price to pay. ;>

Good Morning all....
Thanks for the comments on my rooster photo, I take them evey year, love those chicks & rooters!
Cynthia, I totally took a shot of "the goats won't let me sleep" I wanted to send it but I didn't think it would be OK to post without the artists prmission.
Donna, if you make it into the Fine Arts building, one of my favorite places at the fair, the picture is very small, about 5 square inch and it's toward the back of the building I think in the area where the painted chair is.
I will be there tonight to see Storyhill at 6:30 then Trombone Shorty at 8:30. A great way to end the fairgoing for me! Enjoy the fair if you're going, if not I'll eat some more food for you....

Do any of you who have CHICKENS live "in town"? I know some towns allow this in certain cases, and I've mentioned the possibility to Husband, who isn't as excited about it as I am (he's been there, back on the hippie farm). Any thoughts or advice?

Sweet image, Anna, of Miss S -- I taught kindergarten in early '70s and will NEVER forget the first day each year, in an era when most kids had NOT been to preschool... Separation was usually harder on the moms than the kids. :)

I would have gotten a carmel apple, but my hands were already full with another gooey state fair treat. So Ann-Marie had to take the picture. I am just her live-in IT guy, responsible for all maters technical.

Morning! A favorite treat at the Fair is the frozen apple cider popsicle; sweet, cooling and inexpensive. This is found in the Agriculture Building, I think. Actually, it is the same building that has the wine tasting station.
If I remember correctly, wine has been served at the Fair for only the last 5 years or so. I agree with Jim, it is nice to taste what some local wineries have to offer.

Darcy - some great shots of the show and the fair. Thanks for posting!

Thanks gang, for the food, wine, and exhibit tips. Gotta see that goat picture!

Guy in hat - like your second photo title best.
I was thinking the rooster could be, "Inspiration for Grateful Dead Icons".

CHICKENS IN TOWN-

I imagine regulations are different for any given entity... for Rochester, (I am out of town BTW) You're allowed three HENS, NO Roosters. You must have a fenced 'run' plus an approved 'coop'. There's no fee involved but it has to be inspected and approved by the city before you can have them. Can't remember if your neighbors have to approve also or not...

Check your local zoning ordinances; a lot of times they're online...

i just listened to the interview with johnny from storyhill (i missed most of it this morning because i was in my car without an hd radio). great interview, it was interesting to hear about his other musical groups, i might have to check them out. unfortunately i'll miss storyhillfest this year, but i'm so there next year! campfires and canoeing and folk music? sounds like a perfect weekend to me.

thanks dale!

Darcy -- thoroughly enjoyed seeing your photos. It's gratifying there were so many Heartlanders there.

Thanks, Ben, I may just check into it. Sounds like it may take more space than I'm willing to allot. It would be so cool to have our own eggs, though.
