Sounds & Sights

Posted at 5:40 AM on September 2, 2009 by Dale Connelly (27 Comments)

Mike from Albert Lea had an excellent suggestion on Monday about posting the audio from last Friday's show at the State Fair.
If you missed the broadcast you can now hear it here.
And if you didn't miss it but would like to return there for a two hour vacation from whatever you're supposed to be doing right now, be my guest.

Also on the Monday blog, DanT mentioned having some pictures from the fair and wanting to share them. That sounds like a good idea to me.
Send your favorites and I'll post a couple each day until the fair is done on Labor Day. Let's establish a reasonable limit so I don't spend the rest of the week sorting through photo albums - how about three?
Here are my three, these are shots I took at the fair on Monday afternoon.
I think I'll call them Pensive Goat, Pitchfork At Rest and The Ends.

The Ends.jpg

But if any of these make you think of a different title, I'm open to suggestions.

Send your three favorite Minnesota State Fair photos to dale@radioheartland.org

I was thinking that finally, today was the day that I might beat Dale, but at 5:43 a.m. today's entry is already up and running.

I love the photos. I did the Fair again on Monday w/ my daughter and it felt brand new, even though I had been there on Friday. Gotta love that. I have no other captions, but I can't wait to what TGinTH has to say!

Have a great day Heartlanders!

took me 15 minutes to get audio today (don't know what that's all about but i'm sure it's us, not RH) finally got MP3 to play on the computer.
thanks for the chance to hear friday's program, Dale! that will be fun.
your pictures are grand. that's a Nubian goat and he/she is probably thinking "i wish i were an Alpine - then i wouldn't have this goofy roman nose." :-)
looking forward to more pictures - thanks for posting.
looks like another gorgeous day! hope it is for y'all

Love those pictures!
More titles: Brown Eyed Girl, A Poke in the Hay, Natural Curls.

Happy Wednesday!

The pigs could be "End of the Summer Tails" and the album as a whole could be "End of Summer Tales."

Is there a recording of Ann Reed's "Betty Crocker" besides the live at the Fair version?

Wishing everyone a wonderful day!

Individual captions are not forthcoming this morning - but the three photos brings to mind what might happen if the goat could see the subjects in the other two photos, had opposable thumbs and was feeling mischievous (or maybe the goat is just wishing for opposable thumbs and looking at the pitchfork and the curly tails - which explains the wistful look).

I don't have any photos, but I did see some interesting things. I especially liked the display of the Minnesota Mycologoical society that had many freshly picked examples of Minnesota mushrooms. They even had examples of poisonous mushrooms locked up in a glass case and lots of info on growing mushrooms.

I like your pictures, Dale.. Do you have any pig tales to go with the picture of the pig tails?

Hi Dale! Speaking of pictures, I'd love to know who is who in the pic of the TB bloggers--I've been reading the blog from the beginning and have often wondered what the frequent contributors look like.-JoAn (of Maplewood).

Posted by JoAn | September 2, 2009 7:22 AM

Hey can we get the "warm up show" too on the archives?

Posted by Aaron | September 2, 2009 7:54 AM

JoAn, I can't identify everybody in the photo, but I'm standing next to Beth Ann and in front of Jim (That Other Guy in the Hat - or perhaps That Guy in the Other Hat), and I'm wearing black shorts & blouse.

Dale, thanks for playing Steady On. Gives me chills every time. Is there any chance that might appear on an MPR-issued CD at some point?

Donna,
"A Poke In The Hay" is a far too clever name for that picture.
Wish I'd thought of it.

And Jo An, it would be nice to have names to go with the picture from Monday's blog. Rather than post people's names under their image on the internet without permission, I'd like to hear from everyone in the shot, giving the OK before I do that. So if you're in the group shot from Monday's blog, send an e-mail to dale@radioheartland.org with the correct spelling of your name and your position in the photo.

JoAn, I second your motion...I was also wondering who was which when I looked at the TB photo!

Anna...goat with horns doesn't need a pitchfork...remember the tale of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff? Mischievous goat...surely not. (smile)

And I thank you, Dale and Mike, also for archiving the state fair show...I didn't get to hear much of it so I had already been looking for it earlier this week.

And for the beekeeper song this morning. I discovered (well, friends discovered) I have a hive of honeybees in the siding of my house and wondering if or not I should do something about it.

Happy Wednesday all.

Posted by cynthia in Mahtowa | September 2, 2009 8:12 AM

so, Cynthia, to harvest the honey (and i understand to help the hive prosper?) do you need to rip off the siding? or can you have that side of your house declared something like a natural preserve and get a grant??
cool.

oh, very funny, donna!!! i don't even want to enter the contest now!! :-)

morning, folks (hi, cynthia!)

lots to do this a.m., so short post, but with all goodwill--

Thanks for the Friday show audio! I'm working through what I missed last week, in addition to keeping on top of this week's shows. I hope to see who is who in the group pic too.

Cynthia, it might be interesting to have a honey bee colony living under your siding, but it could also be a problem. You probably can find a bee keeper who could give you advice and help you. I think you know some people involved in sustainable farming who could find a bee keeper to help you.

Titles for photos? Aw, COOL! Let's see...
Photo #1:
My first thought looking at the expression on the goat's face was that it reminded me of those old 'Don't Pollute' commercials from the 70's. And thanks to Barb we know what kind of goat that actually is. My first choice for a title would be "Iron Eyes Nubian."
My second impression was how much the fleeting smile on the lips and the faraway look reminded me of a rather famous painting. Couple that with a little artistic French and my second choice would be "Mona Lisa du Grange."

Photo #2:
Close to Dale's title, my first thought was "Fork in Repose."
My second choice was to add a little French again for "Tines avec Foin."
My third (and favorite) choice was a bit more whimsical, considering what hay and pitchforks may be used for. "Zen Scarecrow"

Photo #3:
"Blue Bottoms" or "Is it Cold in Here?" may or may not be terribly appropriate but appeal to my sense of humor. Simply calling it "The Fair" may also resonate with several viewers. Heh. Or maybe, "Who Needs a Blue Ribbon?" Another one that may or may not be appropriate but I think is funny is "Blue Bacon in the Makin'"

I'd love to see people's pictures from the fair. I completely forgot to bring my camera (so sad) now we can see the fair from everyone else's perspective. What was memorable and notable to one person might be overlooked by someone else. Great idea, Dale! This goat's nose actually fits him quite nicely, somehow makes him look very thoughtful. Have a great morning!

Is it just me. RH cut off my PC about 10 minutes ago and nothing seems to bring it back. Although I have to say, listening to Dale do the underwriter bit over and over and over again is quite interesting!

Posted by sherrilee | September 2, 2009 9:09 AM

It's NOT just you, Sherrilee. We're experiencing "technical difficulties" on our Radio Heatland stream right now. The guys in the coveralls are working on it.

Posted by Mike Pengra | September 2, 2009 9:12 AM

Must have my streaming! Must have my streaming! Can't work without it. Arrrrrrgh.

Posted by Jennifer in St. Louis Park | September 2, 2009 9:19 AM

ahhhhh, much better. Now I can get back to work.

Posted by Jennifer in St. Louis Park | September 2, 2009 9:32 AM

Phew... me too. I'm always SO glad when it's not just me!

Posted by sherrilee | September 2, 2009 9:38 AM

Excellent that y'all are playing music from RH's State Fair show this Saturday eve! And that we can listen to Friday's broadcast... I too will look forward to seeing names with the picture.

Dale, I'm sure there's good song about homecoming-- and finding the house still standing the the husband still here -- but my mind is mush. Do you have one for Thursday a.m.?

Posted by Barbara in Robbinsdale | September 2, 2009 11:07 AM

A where's Eric photo scavenger hunt would be a great idea for next year! I thought about helping out with the hunt, but I wanted to stay and see the show. This way you could do the hunt after the broadcast show and more people could participate.

I sent my three best pictures to Dale. I do have some snap shots of the show if people are interested. I put them at

Thanks for the bee advice. Barb, I don't know when the swarm settled into my siding, but I doubt there is much honey there to harvest...and the siding would have to come off to find it. If there isn't much honey there, they won't make it through the winter.

Jim, thanks for the thought...I'm the beekeeper in residence. Though I do belong to a local beekeeping group and an online group.

The swarm most likely came from one of my hives. As I said, if there isn't much honey, they won't make it through the winter.

Thanks for the help!

wow - just finished listening to the Fair broadcast! - sounds like a really great time! thanks, Dale, for making it available for us.
lots of chuckles

Dale and Kay - glad you liked the caption. I know it's really straw, but "A Poke in the Straw" loses some of the smut effect.
