It's the Clothes!

Radio Heartland has tickets to an Americana Songwriter's Showcase at the Rochester Civic Theater on Wednesday, August 19th. The evening features Chris Knight of Nashville, Brandon Sampson and Dezi Wallace of the band Six Mile Grove, and The Porchlights (Martin Devaney and Jake Hyer).
Use the online form to enter your name in the drawing, and as always, obey the rules. Good luck.

Tiger Woods lost the PGA championship in the last round. Shocking, I know. But the thing that surprised me most in the coverage at Hazeltine was the news that Tiger picks out his tournament-day clothes one year in advance.

For the rest of us, including those who sort through a pile of clothes strewn across the floor each day to choose the best smelling ensemble, this is a startling thing to consider. One year. How can I know what I'm going to want to wear one year from now? It's like hitting a 3 iron out of a sand trap towards a green that's 200 yards away and is hidden by trees. You swing hard and hope for the best. Sometimes it works out, which has to mean that sometimes it doesn't. Imagine.

When it's time to go to the golf course on tournament day, Tiger is presented with his choice from 12 months before, and he has to put it on. There's simply no choice, even if he looks at the shirt and says to himself, "What Was I Thinking?" It doesn't matter, because the marketing operation that serves him has already placed the day's clothes in stores, and people who would like to be Tiger but can only get as close as owning the same shirt have already forked over their cash and are expecting to see their hero in the appropriate garb that day.

Sure, he's getting rich. But Tiger is also in sartorial prison, a captive of his own merchandising empire. Look at how much the man has accomplished. All those victories. He has an admirable work ethic, an impressive ability to focus, unparalleled talent and supreme intelligence. But he's not allowed to change his mind about wearing that shirt. In at least this one regard, you and I have more freedom than the world's most fabulous golfer.

And maybe if he'd had the option to wear whatever shirt struck his fancy yesterday morning, like that spiffy little number Y.E. Yang wore with the red rooster on the shoulder, Tiger would have been able to sink a putt.

How did you choose your outfit today?

Good morning RH,

This is the first day of school in Sioux Falls. I chose a sleeveless dress because I do not have recess duty and I have a decent tan. I will probably wear a skirt tomorrow, because, again, I don't have recess duty.

Yea - back to school. You know what that means, don't you? Time to pretend to be a grown-up again. No more guzzling beer in the mornings either.

Happy Monday, all!

wow. who knew? that talent and fame certainly come with a burden. but i suppose the Tiger's wardrobe is a bit more expansive than the "cleaner jeans" pile and the "dirtier jeans" pile, huh? i'm sleeping in the porch during a family visit this week, so what i have on is what i had on yesterday because i forgot to bring down anything else.
Fair was lots of fun - the goats were fabulous and our entries raked in $14.75 - ha, ha!
good morning, All

oh, Donna - i feel your pain

Hey Barb - I can also relate to your meager earnings :)
Way to go, fair lady!

Hey 14.75 isn't meager....It's way more than I ever earned at a fair. Way to go Barb!

On Mondays this summer I wear the long-sleeved white blouse. My boss bought the same blouse. She picks out her clothes a week at a time and announced that I always wear the blouse on Monday so if she doesn't wear it on the first day of the week we won't be "twins."

I don't follow golf at all but was thrilled to see Mr Yang win. His victory followed speculation by the commentators as to whether an Asian could actually win a major tournament.

Dale could you please play "Arirang" the sentimental favorite of Koreans everywhere in Mr Yang's honor?

Yup, fair over...only had one failure at the Historical Society's log cabin exhibit...attempt to separate milk/cream resulted in much milk, VERY little cream...milk turned into cheese, don't know how that will turn out,.

Pick out clothes...? well, what's clean and still fits. (latter means limited choices).

I'm also back to work today after a week off.

PS. Barb in Blackhoof is an excellent goat show assistant. Thanks, Barb!

My clothing choices are very similar to Barb's. I choose between the better looking jeans for going out or the other ones for working around home. Also, I do sometimes have a problem getting to my clothes due to visiting family members sleeping where I keep my colthes.

I heard a great local band, Xibaba, at the Garlic Festival, this week end. Any one who likes Brasilian music shouldn't miss a chance to hear them. They don't seem to have any recordings, so I guess I can't make a request to have them played.

The main factor in my wardrobe choices this summer has been the air conditioning at work. My building is part of a college campus, and the temperature is controlled by someone several blocks away. it has been very cold here this summer, yet the air conditioning is set as though it is 100 outside. I've had to wear long sleeves and warm socks all summer. The low temperature tomorrow night is predicted to be in the upper 30's. I might have to start wearing sweaters!

My clothing choices come down to what's clean and doesn't need to be ironed (if it's a workday - otherwise it's mostly about what's clean).

Barb - hooray for your $14+ from the fair! I'm sure I don't want to know how much work went into those winnings - but, heck, as a city kid who has never submitted anything to a fair competition, I'm impressed.

Greetings Heartlanders! I read a little about Tiger's clothing sales yesterday. The 4 shirts Tiger Woods chose a year ago were selling for $90 each and they were gone within hours. I don't which is more absurd -- Tiger Woods at the mercy of his handlers or folks paying $90 for a polo/golf shirt that matches Tiger Woods!

It's a world, world, world, world mad!

i put on the next item in my closet which was chosen out of consideration before the first of the month so my wife would have time to clean and press the ensemble, shine the shoes and make sure that everything is in order. i am certain she would be upset if i chose to wear something spontaneously and needed it prepared the same day. and if someone wanted my shirt for 90 dollars they could place orders and have it mailed out with proper notice. size and colors are available in limited quantities.

Well, with the washing machine (ironically) all washed up and half of the laundry unfinished, I had to opt for the 'what's still clean' option.

People I work/live around can always tell if we're in warm/cold season. My fashion consists of polo shirts for warm weather and turtlenecks for cold weather. Just to 'spice things up,' I may wear a sweater once in a great while. Oh yeah...go me!

I like to let fashion catch up to me. It happens about once every 10 years for approximately 10 minutes.

Is what you say really true, biff? I find it hard to believe that you really have your clothes so carefully prepared by your wife.
Well, everyone should dress any way they wish. However, I think you might be pulling my leg and the legs of the others reading this blog

If it is really true that Tiger chooses his clothes for a tournament a year out.. I wonder if it has something to do with his sponsors... so he knows what brands sponsorships he has at a different tournament?

Then again... maybe he is just an oddball, like the rest of us!

I've changed hours a bit and am a bit late today.

Here's my question... how does picking out your outfit a year in advance actually work? Do you put a tag on the clothing and then stick it in the back of your closet? Do you keep a journal by your bedside with the notation "August 16: Orange striped polo w/ Pair #62 khakis"? Or maybe a spreadsheet on the computer?

Have a great week Heartlanders!

Thanks for playing my request on Monday morning! I appreciate it very much. I have a thought for tomorrow's (Tuesday) question of the day. Perhaps you could do an entire segment of songs suggested to celebrate the fact that former House Speaker Tom Delay is going to appear on Dancing with the Stars. I know I can hardly wait to see his performance! (not) I'll start the suggestions rolling - Abba's Dancing Queen; the Nylons Bop Til You Drop and doesn't Chuck Suky (sp?) have a song about dancing in the kitchen? I'm sure others will have many more appropriate songs to suggest...
