Surfin' South Minneapolis

Not only am I not into Extreme Sports, I'm extremely wary of Tame Sports.

Surf the falls.jpg

So it's no surprise that I only watched the Surf Minnehaha Falls competition, even though, as a human subject to the influence of gravity, I was fully qualified to enter.
Frankly, this guy looks great at the top of his run, but being dashed on the rocks below is definitely Not My Thing.

What's the point of taking time off if you have to take more time off afterwards for healing, and to defend yourself against charges of reckless public behavior?

The biggest event on Day 4 of my Summer Staycation is going to be a lengthy nap.

Does anyone here surf?

Morning Heartlanders. I actually took a surfing lessing in Maui many years ago. It was much harder than it looks and for the next two days I was pretty sure my arms were going to fall off. However, having a cool tropical drink after the lesson at the Salty Dog bar off the beach at sunset was fab!

Enjoy your nap Dale!

if i've been listening, the main physical risk takers on the blog are Mark - on his bike - and Joanne in Big Lake - doing karate and dancing wildly. Cynthia has fallen off horses. i have done my own form of Skijoring behind Niblet and Majority, but not by choice. who is brave out there? not i; i can barely stay on my feet on level ground on my own two feet.
it's a cool, beautiful morning.

I believe the most extreme thing I ever did was going into a cave with some friends that like caving. I found out I do not like crawling over rocks in wet holes in the ground. I thought I might be trapped there for life.

However, I don't have Dale's talent for taking a nap. I would like to become a napper, but I just don't have any skill for this.

I'm with you, Barb. I was the official "on shore" photographer for a couple of traveling mates this winter in Mexico as they took surfing lessons. I also protected the cerveza from spilling into the sand.

Mike if we won the Arlo Guthrie tickets would we have been notified by now?

Posted by Aaron | July 16, 2009 6:49 AM

Recently, I have been considering the purchase a bicycle for my rest days from running, which hardly qualifies as thought in the direction of risk taking. On a beach, my role will always to watch my children (if they are present), to make photographs, or (usually) both. I have never given even the tiniest thought to the thought of surfing!

Aaron, Yes. The Arlo Guthrie ticket winners have been notified and the names were posted in yesterday's blog.

I find plenty risk in normal daily life, but YES to NAPS ! Best thing since sliced bread! Sweet dreams Dale...zzz,zzz

I don't know about risky, but I held my breath for too long the first time I rode a horse around a group of jumps...it got better after that. I also remember hyperventilating my first time rock climbing...down. Up was easy.

Surfing? no...not much for water up my nose.

Napping? ABSOLUTELY!

elinor, i think running is risky. some humorist (can't remember who) said that he thought that, at birth, one had an assigned number of heartbeats and he didn't want to spend them running. but (maybe it's my lutheran childhood) i can't spend them napping either. just my choice. not that i don't waste time - i'm an expert at that.
i like guarding the cerveza - although it may not be safe in my keeping.

I am a true daughter of the Great Plains and I don't like large bodies of churning water and certainly would never surf. Its just not natural! I read yesterday, but the way, that August is National Goat Cheese Month, and that there are about 335,000 milk goats in the US. Any good ways we should celebrate?

I occasionally surf the internet. Does that count?
Dale, can you play some Arlo to prep for tonight's concert? Thanks! Looking forward to an unusual evening with Arlo, as always!
Just returned from visiting family in Madison, and yes, the Wiener Washer is still there and working, but I don't know if it still has the funky alternating colored lights as I drove by in daylight-without my camera. Oh well, maybe next time.
Have a good day!

Greetings Heartlanders! I've been missing blog quite a bit since summer started -- sleeping in because I don't have to get the boys up for school.

I didn't consider karate a risk-taking activity until I got injured in sparring 3 weeks ago. Even with full pads on, I got a smashing kick to my shin with my opponents knee as we both went for a kick at same time. I'll starting back to work (and hopefully karate) next week. Terrible bruise, pain and swelling, but no real damage.

Never done surfing, but it certainly looks like a rush! Have a great day!

Personally, I don't 'surf' for fun but I feel like I 'serf' for my job...

National Goat Cheese Month you say? "Get OUT!"

Oh, so many ways to celebrate...The American Cheese Society Conference "Cheese in the Heart of Texas" is August 5-8 in Austin TX. Goat cheese galore!!! My favorites are from the Capriole Dairy -- eg, "Wabash Cannonball" and a lovely little thing wrapped in chestnut leaves that have been soaked in Kentucky Bourbon...Banon something or something Banon.

Or, get some fresh goat milk and make your own.

Oh dear...time to go get some of that fresh goat milk fresh from my two girls.

I hit 51 mph on a bicycle once...pic taken after I was firmly stopped. Other than that the biggest risk I take is painting while on a ladder.

I think I need a nap.

Snorkeling doesn't count? Riskiest thing I've done is probably the fast version of a dance called Kyustendilska Ruchenitsa.

But my stepson teaches the Brazilian martial art Capoeira, which is a forerunner to break dancing; you get the picture. I say let the younger generation(s) do the physical risk taking -- gaurding the food, taking the photos and the naps... it's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it!

Thanks Renee for the info about August... Barb and Cynthia, if your goat cheese were to show up in one of the food co-ops (or elsewhere), what label would it have?

Surfing Minnehaha Falls today would be quite a bit more jarring and less exhilarating than shown in Dale's photo: Over the weekend, at least, the Falls was not Falling. Minnehaha Creek has pretty much stopped creeking, till we get some rain. (And it smells bad.)

thanks, Renee, Barbara, Cynthia for goat cheese promo! our farm (MeadowWild) is not a licensed dairy (have to be to sell to businesses/coops, etc) so you won't see my cheese in your store. soft cheeses like the chevre i make, especially, are very perishable. but i hear one could sell aged (more than 60 days) cheese one makes. i don't have the patience to age cheese yet. maybe when i grow up. i make chevre, but lately have tried feta and mozzarella - fun to do and tasty. it takes moola to get licensed - (we only have bleat-la. oh dear.) and more hoops than i am prepared to jump. but let's celebrate anyway. think i'll post a goat cheese recipe each week of August.

Last night I did some extreme reading - till 3 A.M.
Looked over today's playlist and saw the DAVID BOWIE number. Kay H - never say never.

Daughter in Namibia tried surfing this spring on break and loved it. Here's what she wrote aftewards: "the water off Cape Town in May is the number one breeding grounds for great white sharks, and being in black wet suits looking like seals is, well..." She didn't finish her sentence, but I thought of a few choice words!

I'm still fascinated with the phenomenon of earworms. To think that Mike works with, knock 3 times, people who would purposely, on the ceiling, try to plant one, if you want me, as they walk by, twice on the pipes, just to get his, clink clink, goat, is very, if you aint gonna show, amusing to me!

Donna - LOL. Most of the time when something gets stuck it doesn't bother me too much. However, remember those old beer commercials... "Hamms, the beer-freshing". AARRGGHHHH.

Posted by sherrilee | July 16, 2009 9:56 AM

Ear worms? Get them all the time... I always have music in my head and it's usually whatever song was playing when I turned off the radio / Computer / CD player.
Unless I'm working on a show (play / musical) then you get 'show tunes' stuck in your head.
This week it's 'Interplanet Janet' from the School House Rock series from a musical review I'm working on... one girl practicing it and I got it for the rest of the week! Dang it!!! Arrrrggghhh.... Must. Find. Bluegrass. or Jazz!

Donna -- what were you reading that kept you awake till 3?

Posted by Barbara in Robbinsdale | July 16, 2009 3:46 PM

Hi Barbara,
The book is The Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions - Stuff White People Like by Christian Lander.
It will offend anyone who listens to NPR, but it's so cleverly written, I could not stop!

Posted by Donna | July 16, 2009 5:40 PM

Oh wait - it won't offend EVERYONE who listens to NPR, but a pretty large contingent, I'd bet. (I think I've just dug myself into a hole that I don't know how to get out of.)

Posted by Donna | July 16, 2009 5:47 PM

Donna - oh well, it was late enough that hardly anyone will see the posting. Sounds fascinating, I'll look it up at the lib.
