Today's Trial Balloon has been completely taken over by YesIAm Wireless.
YesIAm Wireless introduces its entry into the growing smart phone market - the YesIAm Pocket Savant!
The Pocket Savant takes smart phone technology well beyond the next level with a high resolution screen able to display controls that are smaller and more impressive than any other device on the market today.
"When I take out my Pocket Savant, a hush falls over the room" says YesIAm CEO Rudy Texter. "It looks like a universal remote control ... for the planet."
The Pocket Savant is the logical next step for YesIAm Wireless, a company that has always understood one of the most important functions of any wireless phone is the feeling of superiority it brings its user, and the humbling effect it has on those nearby who may be contractually locked in to using lesser devices for up to two full years.
"I am not entirely sure of the full extent of its capabilities," said YesIAm Research Director Tamara D. Reckoning.
"We designed the Pocket Savant to be completely open-ended and to believe in its own potential. It certainly looks like it can do a lot of different stuff."
In addition to the usual smart phone features, the Pocket Savant comes loaded with a voodoo application, a stun gun, a transporter function (ala "Star Trek") and x-ray photography.
"The same people who placed those wacky x-ray glasses ads in comic books back in the 60's came up with that one," says Reckoning. "I haven't tried it yet, but the phone also comes with a prognosticator application, and the prognosticator says everything in it will work, eventually."
"We can't wait to get into the pockets of our customers with this great new product," adds CEO Texter. "We expect people to use their YesIAm Pocket Savant in every possible situation."
Even on board aircraft, where some carriers strictly prohibit cell phone use.
"There is a Pocket Cockpit application," observes Reckoning. "Should your phone accidentally interfere with the onboard control systems, you should be able to take over completely and land the thing from your seat. Make sure the flight crew knows you are the new pilot. You can get extra helpings of free peanuts."
Although they're not promoting it, the YesIAm Pocket Savant should also be able to receive Radio Heartland.
Anyone in the market for a new smart phone?
i'm not anti-technology, T. D. R., but i don't think i'll be buying a Pocket Savant any time soon. i know Mark loves his iPhone because he can listen to RH while he is riding to work. but at our little end-of-the-road place, cell reception is poor at best. and (do i sound like the Old Man on SNL?) "we LIKE it that way!" so we'll just hope our internet satellite and Windows media keep working - all the "apps" we need.
Dale, I laughed out loud when I said TDR's name out loud. It took me a few seconds to get it, but it was just one of those "I say tomayto, you say tomahto" things. Brilliant!
I sympathize, Barb, and I am also one of those people with a cell phone that's on only when I want to use it to make a call. In fact, I use a pay-as-you-go phone, so it only costs a few bucks a month. Mostly I call home from the grocery store to ask if I'm supposed to get salted or unsalted butter. But I do believe smart phones are the way of the future, and someday I won't have to make that call from the dairy aisle. I'll simply ask the gizmo, and it will tell me exactly what I am supposed to do.
No new cell phone for me either, don't use it enough to warrant spending on a new one.
Hey, the website looks/behaves differently, was something wrongish about it's old look or did you hire Bubby to help out at MPR?
Right you are, Kim.
The changes you see today are part of a massive re-design of MPR's website. In the upper right hand corner you should see a box that introduces MPR's NewsQ. Take a look and let us know what you think.
Q for quick summary? Looks pretty good Dale, but I'll have to dig deeper as time allows, lots to see there!
Good Morning!
Old news to me since I already have the 747 KoPilot app on my iPhone...
Oddly enough, I generally agree with Barb that there is a certain splendor in simplicity even though I punctuate it with pockets of high tech geekiness. I mean really, who else on the list relies more on their bicycle than their car?
Have a terrific Thursday!
Kim's observation caught me by surprise, too. I understand the need for companies to reinvent themselves and their marketing approach, But, it's like the feeling of disorientation whenever my grocery store decides to revamp its look and everything gets relocated to somewhere else in the store. It's designed to keep you shopping longer, but it' can be very maddening. Compare the simple, clean look of the original Google web page with its new cousin iGoogle: what can webmasters learn from this?
Thanks for the great music every morning.
I'm barely managing to enter the digital age. At least I can get Radio heaqrtland on my computer. I have a cell phone with a camera, but have never learned to use it, although the rest of my family does.
We have a digital camera, but don't know how to run the the computer program that goes with it. I need to catch up with things like using an Ipod before trying an iphone.
That picture of the aircraft cock pit on the Pocket savant is scary. I think one of my family members who is good with digital technology should have a Pocket Savant with the controls for all the digital devices that I have and can't operate so they can operate them for me.
Medium techy here...can use a basic cell phone, computer...but my challenge is still learning the language of my animal friends...especially, this summer, the bees, most amazing creatures!
The new website is, well, I'm finding the print too small and light. Must have been designed by people younger than 40.
And, being from "outstate MN" and subject to comments about "Minneapolis Public Radio" it is a bit disheartening to see the the Mpls skyline on the masthead. Will it change to trees sometime?
Good morning, all!
Looks like the Swiss Army Knife of handhelds. :-)
Here is a comment on the up dated MPR website. Instead of up dating their website, MPR needs to up date it's news and music programing. I get more complete news and music coverage other places.
Good Morning Heartland,
How the hell are ya?!
I'm back again from the little wee IA town where my parents live. No RH access there, except the library which is open at the librarian's discretion and she's never there before 10 A.M.
I love the new MPR design, the entry this morning, the new fangled pocket savant cell...I love it all, now that I'm back in the saddle again with Radio Heartland and all its zaniness that completes me. (And the music's not bad either!)
This Feist song always makes me think of Shania Twain's, Man I Feel Like a Woman, because of the OH,Oh-Oh's in it. Similar, doncha think? I love this song too!
When you can land a plane from your phone, why isn't there a CTRL + ALT + DEL all-in-one button on a keyboard? It's hard to have breakfast in one hand and try to CTRL + ALT + DEL with the other!
yup, even this message i'm typing is too small for my eyes xoshkd whos h klw s= whali i'm h typnas!
:-)
Gail - you need a mac.
Barb - your spelling is easily identifiable and I'm pretty sure there's a swear word in there somewhere!
Donna, that's a big mac in my hand for breakfast.
Ha Ha Gail - that's great!
Hey all and good morning. As I sip my coffee I would like to invite your feedback on the new site. Wish I had a YesIAm Pocket Savant to read responses on... on the go!
well, i'm embarrassed. yeah, Donna - might have slipped one in there :-)
anyhoo, i was using my husband's default browser to get the RH and for some reason his Google extra fancy thinger doesn't have a "view" option at the top of the page. so now i'm in my little, old browser; have a "view" option which, if clicked, will give me the option of LARGE PRINT FOR OLD EYES. will increase the size of the print on the page for ya, Cynthia.
Q looks interesting and overwhelming!
I think the YesIAm phone even beats some of the capabilities of the Pomegranate Phone - the best phone you've never heard of...take a look at the following link:
Me? I'm happy with my basic Motorola Razr for calls and occasional text. The camera is handy in a pinch.
I have yet to succumb to the cell phone. Got an iPod touch a few months back. While it certainly isn't an 'essential,' it can be a handy tool and is certainly fabulous at being a 'waste of time facilitator' with all the games available for download. At some point, I may get a callie. I'm not anti-technology per se, I just like to be able to control how much I interact with it on a personal basis. I know that technology has pervaded every aspect of our lives (or has the option to pervade, should you take it) but when I'm driving, I don't want to talk on the phone. When I'm out shooting pictures or walking around the lakes with my wife, I don't want the phone to ring. With so many distractions in our lives, I like to be able to focus on what I want to focus on. As you probably deduced, we don't have kids...
Regarding the site re-design - I was just trying to find the show archive so I could finish listening to one of the shows I missed last week. Am I missing these somewhere? They were available by clicking on the Dale Connelly show link, then on the calendar. I can find the playlist archive.
OK, I found it, the Trial Balloon Balog.:) (Wasn't that something from the Hobbit?) New design tripped me up! (Dale, you can disregard my email when I couldn't find the darn thing!)
I'm like those of you who use them only for my own convenience... the pay as you go. It's come in handy to have when our land line isn't working well.
Donna -- I'm also back from an Iowa parent visit today... Which little town??
Barbara - the town is Webb and it makes Sioux Falls seem like NYC. Where in IA were you?
Hi, gang!!!
well, i had a big milestone this morning--actually took out my pay-as-you-go phone while in the car at a stop sign, dialed it, and then drove as i talked!!! wow. i felt so multi-tasky....
never did that before.
i am with some of the other folks here re teeny type, shrinking text, etc.....MAKE IT BIGGER AGAIN, PLEASE!!!!
i can barely read what i'm writing here, and it's also hard to read what others have written without having to change glasses...
that was a funny phone blog, dale---i seem to use my phone most for calling people to say why i'm not where they thought i'd be, cuz i forgot or got too busy....
have only received one call on it, and that was me calling from my land line to find out what the ring tone sounds like---ha ha ha
Hi, Donna!!!!Damn, good to hear from you!
hi also to cynthia, barb, mark, jeannie, steve....you know why--
Hi - I see you added a line between the blog posts, much easier to read.
I mentioned the archived RH shows above, I also noticed that for the RH Saturday night show on the news service, there are no archived shows after May 16. They had been there through at least June 13, not sure if June 20 had gotten posted. Hope they'll return please.
Donna - I was in Marshalltown. Also lived as a kid in Storm Lake... will look up Webb on the map!
1.type is WAY too small for us old guys
2. if i ever get a cell phone i like the idea of a stun gun feature to use on the people in #3
3.it is really irritating when people talk on their phones in the grocery store/Target/wherever, i really don't need to know the details of these boring people's lives; and why is it necessary to yell when you are on a cell phone? is the technology really that poor? and if it is, why even use it?
arggggggggggg
