Tim The Knife.jpg

Ever since it became clear that Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty would balance the state's budget using his power of unallotment, this Bobby Darin classic has been running through my mind. Maybe that's why I've felt like I have a head full of cement bags for the past few weeks (they're just for the weight, dear). Just a jackknife has MacHeath, dear, but T Paw will do his cutting with a pen. Or maybe it's a penknife. Look out, UnaLotte Lenya!

Fortunately, therapy is available.

I wrote down the words that were rattling around in my noggin,
and In The Loop host Jeff Horwich, the most Bobby Darin-esque guy working in public radio today, brought them to life in this dead-on parody.

Now I'm free, but for you the madness is just beginning.

Listen to the song, and then consider - what other music best accompanies unallotment?

your skills in this realm are getting kinda scary, Dale! i will listen to the song later, since i can't stream both your program and your link at the same time (your techno-talents are wonderful!) i think. thanks for your wit - helps lighten the unallotment load.
happy monday, All

Good morning, Dale and Mike,

Did T Paw cut out the archive for the Dale Connelly Show? I can't seem to find past shows to listen to.

Dale,
You and Jeff have hit the nail on the head. For additional tracks on the LP can I suggest the following?
I'm Just a Boy Who Can't Say Yes (a la Oklahoma)
I Won't Grow Up Tim sings along with the boys from Peter Pan about his refusal to work with the legislature
Swing on a star The verses along the line of would you rather be a pig who doesn't give a fig should give our rising national political star something to think about

On a more somber note at this link http://www.mnchurches.org/programs/education/FaithfulMinnesota.html is information about a solemn funeral procession tomorrow where religious folks will mourn unallotment and the impact on people. Perhaps a dirge is the most appropriate music for these vicious cuts.

I guess there are Pawlenty of songs about not enough money such as Bread Line Blues and the Billy Holiday classic - Them That Got Shall Get or whatever name is used for this song. I believe there will still be Pawlenty of money for the well to do.

Perhaps T-Paw is waiting for "Pennies from Heaven" rather than find another way to balance the budget?...(Or maybe it's us MN taxpayers, local governments, etc. who now need to wait for Pennies from Heaven since there won't be pennies from St. Paul...)

Dale and Jeff,

You guys are are fantastic team. That's the funniest bit of political satire I've heard in years.

Thanks.

I will add my thanks to the chorus, Dale. Your words and Jeff's delivery are spot on. So so funny.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. You are too kind.
And Gail, I'll look into the archive question.
It may be that the re-launch of the website re-arranged things in our archive section.
Happy Monday, all.

Good morning, all. I've been on a connectivity conference call since I got to work at 6:30 today. Have missed the whole show but will catch the recorded version. Have a great day!

I'm looking forward to listening to the parody after the show is done. Loved hearing Tom Russell - I've been making a list of favorites for a couple years now, and that's one of the first I put down (The Pugilist at 59).

Dale, I've been looking for the archived shows, too, including the Saturday night show. Thanks!

Enjoy the day everyone.

oh, Dale - your lyrics and Jeff's singing are spot on! thanks so much for bringing humor into this dismal swamp of politics.
Dream is thinking of unallotments - like the whole gang of triplets - not for her future career but for her sanity. she doesn't like being used as a trampoline and she thinks the the kiddos don't appreciate her other qualities - just her capacious udder. she feels objectified.

I'm kind of slow thinking today, but will throw out a couple broad possibilities for music to accompany unallotment: Something from the soundtracks of "Edward Scissorhands" and "Sweeney Todd"?

Hi Heartlanders. Up at the top left is a search section. I typed in "archives" and got a whole list of different sections of archives. I hope this helps until Dale can look into it.

Great parody by the way. I always did like Bobby Darin.

Mike from Mississippi - I had tried that search already, but could not find the archive of the DC show. Did you find it?

Listening to rebroadcast, Coalmine was a nice touch, Dale, haven't heard that one for ages!

Great additional tracks, Beth-Ann. I was trying to think of more but it's not happening...

Off topic: Barb in Blackhoof and Cynthia in Mahtowa, the Sunday Star Trib had a book review of Goat Song by Brad Kessler with this sub-heading: "A sensuous and reverent elegy to the humble life of tending goats and making cheese." Do you make cheese too?

Love the parody!
Can you come up with something
for our "Terminator Governator" here
in California?

hi Barbara in Robbinsdale - Cynthia makes many delicious kinds of cheese - and is quite adventurous. i am way more a newby and try to follow the recipes very carefully (so far). but that is the main reason i wanted goats - to make cheese. lots of fun - and as humbling as the goats are. i make chevre a couple times/week and every time the results vary just a tad. it might be the ambient temperature, it might be who knows what? thanks for the book reference - gonna look it up!

Glad so many of your enjoyed the tune. Props to Dale for spot-on lyrics (and great Photoshop work, by the way). Glad I could help! - Jeff
