Happy Father's Day!
Quite by accident, Radio Heartland spiraled into an extended father-song cycle last Friday morning, thanks to enthusiastic listeners who sent in suggestions for songs that deal, in one way or another, with Dear Old Dad.
I was surprised to discover how easy it was to fill three hours.
To add to the fun, there was a lyric scavenger hunt, which Linda in St. Paul (West Side) won hands down, by correctly identifying the source of each of these inside-the-song quotes. Congratulations, Linda!
- It wasted no time and it had one desire, at the end of each week to be wound. (My Grandfather's Clock)
- Now the music takes me back across the yellowed age to the summers with my dad and the tunes he played. (My Daddy Played the Banjo)
- I grew up quick and I grew up mean, my fists got hard and my wits got keen. (A Boy Named Sue)
- You never talk much in a fishing boat, 'cause it scares the fish away. You just give it time and watch your line. (My Father's Only Son)
- He always brought an extra pail of water from the well. And if you needed a confidant, he was the one who would never tell. (My Father Was a Quiet Man)
- He could look you in the eye and sell you a car. That's not an easy thing to do. (My Old Man)
- From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen. Now there's a way, and I know that I have to go away. (Father & Son)
- And with a teardrop in his eye, as he went to say goodbye, said he, "My lad, that's too bad. I've some advice to give." (Always Leave 'Em Laughing When You Say Goodbye)
- Me, I'm a hick and I dance like one. I just kind of jump around and grin. (Billy From the Hills)
- Is it true what they say that papa never worked a day in his life? (Papa Was a Rollin' Stone)
This afternoon, for your listening pleasure and just because we could, Radio Heartland presents a re-broadcast of that Friday morning show. There are some funny tunes, here, and some lovely ones as well. Singer-songwriters seem to be quite eager to write beautiful, loving songs about how unable they are to say beautiful, loving things to their dads, and vice-versa.
Listen for the Dad-Love Cavalcade of Songs this afternoon from 1 to 4, on Radio Heartland.
