Tonight on Radio Heartland on MPR news stations, we'll get samples from a world full of music and hear a singer/songwriter who left Windom, Minnesota for the bright lights of Los Angeles.
In the first hour, Steve Kaul, front man for The Brass Kings, talks about a love of exotic world rhythms that fired his imagination while growing up in Bemidji. We'll hear music from Mali, Uganda and India, along with Euan Kerr's interview with Julie Fowlis, one of the few musicians singing in Scots gaelic today. We'll also hear a cut from banjo player Bela Fleck's new recording "Throw Down Your Heart". Bela said the project got it's start when "I developed the suspicion that some of the greatest acoustic music on earth is hidden in the small villages in Africa."
In the second hour, my guest is Randy Weeks, who grew up in Windom, Minnesota and worked at the Toro plant after high school before deciding to try his luck as a musician in Los Angeles. After years of success on the coast, Randy has migrated again, this time to Austin, Texas. We'll hear some songs from his new album,"Going My Way".
Leaving the small town for the big city, leaving the big city for the small town, and lots of circling the globe this Saturday night on Radio Heartland.
I am making this comment as I listen to Radio Heartland with Dale Connelly, the Saturday night program. I wonder if you have considered connecting a blog to this show as you have done with the week day morning show that is only on HD radio or the internet. I guess the format for this show and the way it is carried is different, but I wonder if a blog might also be a good thing for the saturday night show. This would be a blog that would take comments while the saturday night show is on the air.
I second Jim's idea! I'm also sitting and listening to the Saturday night show and decided to see if any of the RH community was blogging in cyberspace. Love the show tonight, the universal language of music.
Greetings! I usually try to check in if I remember to listen on Sat night. It's certainly fun to have Dale write something interesting to start a conversation in the blog during the week. I'm not sure how it would work, as the Sat night show is pre-recorded and Dale isn't in the studio (I'm assuming). Although he does respond in the blog if people comment or ask questions.
I missed the first part of show -- darn it! But this Irish sounding music is fun.
I can't resist making another comment after hearing Steve Kaul mention that Nirmala will be playing at the 416 Club that he is hosting. I was lucky to hear Nirmala play with Anthony Cox at the Cedar a while ago and this was a very amazing concert that also included two drumers. Anthony Cox did a very good job of working with Nirmala and said the great jazz musican, Ornette Coleman, was very impressed with Nirmala when Anthony and Nirmala played at a concert where Ornette played. You should see if you can get Nirmala as a visitor on Radio Heartland.
There is something wrong with the audio tonight....
some kind of buffering thing going on??? Alot of the audio was dropped durring Steve Kauls interview.
Hi Jim & Kathy,
Happy Sat night! We are also enjoying the show tonight. Technical difficulties aside.....
While it is a good idea to blog durring the Sat night show, the show is preiviously recorded so we won't get Dales feedback. Having said that, I'm all about connecting with the RH listeners out there.....
This is yet another great show from Radio Heartland.
We hope to go to the Cedar tomorrow night after listening to the Steve Kaul portion of the show.
