Tonight on Radio Heartland on Minnesota Public Radio News, Twin Cities folksinger Larry Long will explain how it came to pass that he was invited to share the Madison Square Garden stage with Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Ani DiFranco and impressive list of stars tomorrow afternoon in New York City. The event is a fundraiser for Pete Seeger's Clearwater project, which is all about education and environmental activism for the Hudson River.
And it also happens to be Pete Seeger's 90th birthday.
We'll also hear excerpts from Radio Heartland's "Power of Two" concert at the Fitzgerald Theater, recorded last March 28th. Karen Savoca & Pete Heitzman, Storyhill and Lou & Peter Berryman gave us a good look at some of the different ways two musicians can mesmerize an audience. The full concert will be heard on radioheartland.org (91.1 HD2 in the Twin Cities) tomorrow evening at 7.
In the second hour, I'll welcome Carmen Souza and her band to the studio. Carmen grew up in Portugal, but her parents are from the Cape Verde islands, just off the western coast of Africa, so the islands' traditional music came to her naturally. The jazz-influenced variations she records to increasing acclaim are her own innovation. To find out where Cape Verdean music is headed, listen to Carmen Souza on Radio Heartland.
looking forward to sunday evening, Dale and Mike! thanks for replaying this "Power of Two" concert before our bedtime!
I'm just gonna chime in here Barb, because in a way, I know you. As one of the privileged audience members at the Power of Two concert, I am compelled to say the same words to you that my daughter, Lora, said to me right before Johnny Depp made his appearance in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie - "Mom, get ready for a treat!"
Greetings -- I'm enjoying tea again this evening while listening to RH. The first hour of Larry Long and Pete Seeger stuff was cool -- they are such bedrocks of Americana music.
Dale, thanks for introducing us to Carmen Souza. I am definitely liking her sound. Folk music is good, but I really enjoy -- OK, I'll say it -- a more funky sound. Very interesting music with the jazzy bits. Hope other folks are enjoying this!
