Happy Memorial Day!

Posted at 6:00 AM on May 25, 2009 by Dale Connelly (17 Comments)

Jasper insisted I take the day off, and I have done as ordered.

I realize that the insatiable human desire for vacation time is the very thing that will allow computers to run amok, eventually. So be it. A long weekend is a lovely thing, made lovelier by the short work week that follows. A highlight of that short week could be attending a concert by Richie Havens at the Cedar Cultural Center this Thursday.

Enter to win a pair of tickets from Radio Heartland, and good luck!

everyone needs holidays and a short work week is good also, Dale. it reminded me that we are your "job" - wow - it never occurred to me! :-) we'll miss you today but we're glad you're getting an opportunity to relax (don't do yard chores like digging dandelions!)
hope to have you and Mike back tuesday morning.
as for our holiday, Dodger and Alba can't take the day off. they would be in pain if they did, so we will milk them at 6:30 am and pm (Alba is doing much better - Cynthia did an emergency visit on saturday - and things are good out there again - thanks, Cynthia!). happy day, All

Good Morning!

Well here I am on my last employment-free day and the gainfully employed disk jockey is jonesing for not working. I'll be there soon I'm sure but am currently thinking more like Dodger and Alba (good news on her Barb!) with respect to that ongoing routine. By Friday I'm sure I'll be happy for the days off. In the mean time I will force myself to have a great holiday...

When I try to enter the ticket drawing, it just takes me to a Microsoft page

Barb - glad Alba is more cooperative-what was the secret? Or did she finally sense that milking reduces pain. You really have had an armful! No short work week with animals.!

My cat Sophie is sweet and affectionate but has certain mischief she MUST get into-usually involves climbing anything she can. My guess is that goats are not as ritualistic as cats- if fact goats seem to glory in spontaneity.

Enjoy the time off Dale and Mike. I planted flowers and discovered some out of shape muscles.

Barb - did Cynthia turn out to be a goat whisperer? Glad Alba's cooperating now. How was the fest?

Mark - When you were in Sioux Falls, did you happen to ride/see our trails? They loop the city and follow the Sioux River for several miles. Best wishes with the job; hope it won't interfere too much with your blog contributions. Thanks for all those nice things you said about teachers!

Jenny - is Sophie good at catching bunnies?

Aaron - was just curious, so i tried the link and got the same Web Access page with request for username and password -
thanks, Jenny and Mark - as usual, the problem was with me. i have to quit babying her and quit thinking so much and i had to let her get hungry and yes, feel the pain of a distended udder. hard for me to do. but it only took 12 hours. Cynthia helped me see that i was anthropomorphizing ("she is probably still grieving over the deaths of her kids, blah, blah, blah...") Alba and i are doing much better
next big thing is i have to start weaning Tammy W and Artie. you will be able to hear them yelling even in the metro area, i bet. but if you hear a big explosion, that will be Dream - HUGE doesn't describe that poor girl.
and Jenny, i think cats are more ritualistic than goats, but goats do love their routines also. and like cats, they notice the smallest change in their surroundings. i guess all animals are more tuned in to their surroundings than we are. if we move a piece of furniture our cats investigate immediately. but i bet if someone painted my car a different color i might not notice right away.......

Hi Donna - yes, but Cynthia actually is good at whispering to distraught humans also.
the festival was fun - we ate, we visited, we listened to the Wurst Polka Band, shopped in the used bookstore .. then we got to meet Cynthia's beautiful horses, her bees, chickens, sleepy doggy and then came here to see the goats, talk about goats, drink coffee and eat brownies. was a great time and i'm happy to have found a new friend and it's all because of RH and TB! Thanks Dale and Mike!
and here comes Bubba, the invisible cat, to sit in front of the computer screen.....
Mark hope this last day of freedom is a great one and that your new job is all you hope for (with plenty of time off to ride your bike and enjoy life)

I had the same problem with the ticket entry - took me to Microsoft Web Access.

Back to the garden...

Dale,
I don't begrudge you the day off, but Jasper just doesn't have the same warmth and wit that you bring to our mornings. I think I will go listen to some archival shows.

Good news I am not anthropomorphizing Jasper so Cynthia will not need to come do an intervetion whispered or otherwise!

Barb, you are so dang funny! (I'm trying to curse less.) If you haven't seen the Conan birdwatching clip yet, and you plan to, also look for the one where he's playing old time baseball.

I'm guessing at least one of our radio guys is in a fishing boat this weekend.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if I seemed to be complaining about work. I love doing Radio Heartland and contributing to the blog - see? I'm visiting on my day off! It's different, coming at it from this angle. I'm glad to see Barb and Cynthia are working together and sharing brownies.

Have a great first day at work tomorrow, Mark. You should probably check on the workplace streaming policies before you try to listen to any internet radio stations at your desk.

And Donna, the radio guys are enjoying their day off, and I am not the one in the boat.

The link to the ticket giveaway page should work now, Aaron, Barb and Gail. Some wrong information got into the connective tissue between the blog and the entry form.
My apologies for the mix-up. Let me know if you have any more problems, and good luck!

Sophie is an indoor cat and a proven mouser. However she is fascinated but afraid of close up larger animals she has seen, including a wild turkey, bunnies, ducks and a possum (who was face to face with her (with window of sliding door to our patio between them) last year. When I first glimpsed in the dawn light I thought it was a cat with a hairless or wet tail and a really bad hair day!

What a glorious spring, trying rapidly to be summer! I am trying to discern the less common birds especially by song. You have obviously allowed and created growth of good habitat. Is is reassuring to hear of the variety of the returnees ( or passing through). The Cornell Ornithology page is helpful. Has anyone seen any scarlet tanagers?

I just wanted to take a minute to tell you what a positive difference you're making in my life, Dale. I'm still making music and teaching songwriting around the country, but when I'm home, I listen to your stream. I love our local station, but their general manager recently drank the "consultant" kool-aid, and turned it into a straight AAA clone for a while--a disastrous decision that severely cut into their revenues and fragmented their supporting community. I don't know how you do it, but instead of dividing music into eras and styles, you divide it into good and not so good, and forget the not so good. When I want to hear younger artists who get it, who can write songs with meaning, I know I can find them on your show without suffering through those who don't get it. The old stuff you play is marked by its quality, energy, and love of life. When I begin to feel isolated, I tune in to your stream, and am reminded that the good stuff is still there, and still happening anew.

No scarlet tanigers, but I had an indigo bunting(!) last week, apparently passing through. Thanks to other birders on this site I decided to keep feeding longer this spring.

Dale and Mike, I'm so glad to know you're not in the studio today. And beside Richie Havens at the Cedar, Iris Dement is coming in June!

Mark, good luck and we'll miss your thoughts when you don't have time.

Happy Glorious Holi-Day, everyone. May we all spend lots of it outside!

I wonder if anyone will see this but I just got in from working on our little square foot garden box and saw some comments I thought I'd like to reply to.

Donna - We did ride the trail that goes around the city, around 20 miles I think. It's a great trail. Thanks for the best wishes, I may be a little sparse on the blog but we'll see. I had a soft spot for teachers even before meeting Jeanne but it's been a real eye opener that the folks we trust with the minds of our future are so poorly treated.

Barb - The whole weekend has been fantastic and while the job will take up lots of my time I will be getting in lots of riding just getting there and back since it's a little better than 16 miles each way. Most of my route options are pretty good so it will be enjoyable. I don't feel like I am giving up my freedom since we either have time or money so I will just be shifting from having lots of time to having, hmmm maybe there's a hitch in my plan...

Dale - I'm certain to have a great first day at work, it's the days after that that can get tougher but thanks! I will check the policies but my iPhone will be able to sneak around them if they are restrictive. I didn't mean to imply you were complaining, just pointing out a juxtaposition from my perspective. It's very clear you love Radio Heartland as no one could pull off such a great concept without a lot of heart for it and we are blessed that you also have the talent to back it up.

Barbara in Robbinsdale - Thanks, I hope to still contribute as it has been quite fun being part of the Radio Heartland blogger brigade.

My ears won't drift far from Radio Heartland and my fingers will be itching to dance across cyberspace to join in the fun.

Mark, would Jeanne mind if you were cloned? I just drank a Sierra Nevada and will probably wish later that I'd not hit 'post', but what the hell!

Hi there! Question. Could we possbily slack off on the Roaches song about hanging clothes on the line? "Quirky" might be a nice way to describe it but I say it's a nothing song that's very annoying. Also I listen to Radio Heartland just 3 hours a day for Dale and it's pretty awful to hear the same damn songs week after week. I thought Radio Heartland would really open up it's playlists but that dumb Clothesline song twice a week and "Go to the back of the line sir" just when you MOST expect it, which is all the time...
