The Goatles

Posted at 4:34 AM on April 6, 2009 by Dale Connelly (25 Comments)

Thanks to everyone who stepped up last week, volunteering to join our Radio Heartland Community Band.
Since the formidible barriers of time, space and talent will likely prevent us from ever playing together, I went online to find good looking, musically adept people to stand in for us in a group shot. There were a lot of them there, and while they didn't volunteer the way you did, they didn't object, either.

Here's our line-up, as it stood at the end of the day Friday.
Of course, since it's a band, constant change is expected.
Encouraged, even.

Sherrilee - piano, shakers & tambourines
Barb - clarinet, keyboard & throat singing
Cynthia - clarinet
Jacque - clarinet, spoons
Gail - rub board
Mark - flute
Anna - flute & tupperware
Joanne - vocals
Paul - tympani
Jerry - tuba
Kay - guitar & vocal
Ole - guitar & vocal
Donna - gyrations
Mike Pengra - drums
Barbara - guitar, cello, steel drum
Gus - keyboard, vocal, congas
Elinor - piano, electric organ, flute
Tim - vocals
Robin - bass trombone
Don - French Horn, guitar
Cindy - kazoo
Beth-ann - iPhone Ocarina
Kris - iPhone Ocarina

I could hear this band doing a cover of "The Hustle".
What else is on the set list?

Dale I am so glad that when I joined the band you gave me an iPhone. I am generally lo-tech so I offered to play the kazoo but if you insist on switching me to the eye phone, I'll do my best.

Any chance for some Bill Staines this morning?

Thanks!

what a beautiful photo of us all, Dale! you are getting to be a real talent with photo shop - and Dream is happy to be included
we have Wild Blue satellite problems today so no streaming! it was the reason i got up this morning - to hear RH - but dial up won't cut it.
good day, All. feels like i should go back to bed.
can we cover "Born to Be Wild" (Steppenwolf)?

Good morning RH,

Wow - that's an eclectic-looking band! Bet we could cover a reggae tune - a good hip-swiveling one. Any in the files, guys?

a group of legendary talent. ;-)

this is the first time i've been able to stream the show in a couple of weeks! any chance we could hear the mamas & the papas "dream a little dream"?

good morning, all!

Both the band (of volunteers) and the tragedy in Italy brought this song to mind..
and to my friend Maxene who is listening in Ohio this morning, just returned from Italy..

You'ved Got a Friend.

Put me down for harmonica (pun intended, I suppose!)

Can our first recoding be "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heartland Band"?

Me, your kettle drummer! Man, you made me look good, younger too. Let's hear it for radio, especially Heartland Radio. I enjoy it!!! Paul
p.s is there a support group for blogging? One could easily get addicted to this.

Good Morning!

We are going to need a big bus for this band!

I would like to hear Leader of the Band by Dan Fogelberg to honor our Maestro: Dale!

With three flutes (plus the kazoo and ocarinas), it seems like we should have some Jethro Tull in our repertoire. And with sheer size, I think something with a "big" sound like Earth, Wind and Fire - or if we're feeling ambitious (taking a sharp left turn, musically), some Aaron Copeland.

Greetings Heartlanders!

I love our group photo -- we look awesome! Of course, every band needs to play something FUNKY! I always love to hear Beau Soleil or The Bobs -- so surprise me, Dale. I can never think of song titles anyway.

It looks like a great day -- have fun everybody!

I was called in to substitute teach and missed the chance to sign up for the band. I could play a rythym instrument if it is okay to play on the off beat some times which is what I tend to do. I think the band should play some Beetle songs such as St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as was already suggested or We All Live in a Yellow Submarine.

I meant to throw this in Friday's blog, usually my best musical contribution is as part of the appreciative audience.

However, I did take organ lessons in grade school junior high. I also was part of our junior high chorus and select choir. These days my singing is limited to the car and church, but could offer to do backup vocals if needed.

BTW, I work at Wenger Corp. in Owatonna - we make all kinds of equipment for music performance - staging, risers, music stands and musicians chairs, acoustical shells - just about everything except the instruments. So I might be able to swing a deal for the startup of the Goatles.

Dale -- thanks for Beau Soleil, Cafe Accordion and Dave Brubeck -- nice set of dance and funk tunes! You're the best!

Forgot to comment on how well Dale did in finding a picture of me playing the flute! It must be a pretty old picture since there is still color in my hair or is that more Photoshop wizardry?

Good Morning All! I, too missed the band signup since it was the last day of Spring Break at our house. I could do guitar and vocals also, or I could dig out my old recorder or clarinet which haven't been touched in many years. Or I could attempt to teach myself banjo...

Since it appears we will be The Goatles, shouldn't we make sure we can play the old children's song Bill Grogan's Goat?!

Thanks, Mike!

With your help, we could become the best-equipped band that never plays! A true distinction for a soon-to-be legendary group.

Are you going to play the 'Who's on First' by Abbott and Costello for open of the baseball season? Cheerio!

Posted by Peg | April 6, 2009 8:47 AM

How about the annual 'who's on first' routine by abbot and costello? thanks and cheerio!

Posted by peg | April 6, 2009 8:52 AM

I just got to the office and logged on. I'll be glad to play autoharp. If I dig through the stuff in the basement I might be able to find my nose flute.

Posted by Lu | April 6, 2009 8:57 AM

Thanks for the idea, Peg.
There are so many baseball-related tunes and poems out there. I'll dig into the collection to see if I can locate Abbot & Costello for Tuesday.
If I can find "Who's On First", I'll put it in the 8 o'clock hour.

Beth-Ann -- I'll bring the iPhone over to you later today, in time for the first rehearsal of the Goatles. Please have the kazoo warmed up and ready to go.
Since you'll have my phone, you can pick up my kids when they call for rides. Thanks!

Good morning...I have had no phone line since Friday and so missed Radio Heartland this morning. Now at work I have a meeting at eleven so will miss the re-broadcast, at least the first hour.

Big emptiness in my morning! Did someone mention withdrawal? addiction? For sure.

"The goatles" is perfect...and what a fun photo. I am so proud to be included.

Hope Qwest gets my phone fixed this morning...
