Air Brakes

Posted at 4:34 AM on March 19, 2009 by Dale Connelly (46 Comments)

Yesterday's birds-on-jungle gym and goats-in-tree photos sold many listeners on the merits of looking up to see what might be overhead.
It's always a good policy.
The first year Eric Ringham hid on the grounds of the Minnesota State Fair for the "Where's Eric" game, he put himself on the roof of a building.
The second year, he was in a tree. The search team walked right under him.
Near the end of the string of comments on the "Bird Feeder Report" entry was this one from Gus, who listens in Northfield:

Earlier this week, I saw a bicycle-bird in a tree here on campus.
How it got there, I have no idea.
Posted by Gus | March 18, 2009 1:49 PM

A bicycle-bird? Yes indeed. Here's the picture.

Air Brakes small.jpg

And no, it's not Gus's bike, but this image does beg for an explanation.
I've never been very good with caption contests. After four or five words, discipline breaks down and I fall into an endless, pitiful cycle of word substitution and re-arranging.
So let's try a limited version - two words. That's all you get.
One word is OK if you can do it.
It's more of a title than a caption - the end-of-shift police report version of events. Readers can use their imaginations to fill in the blanks, given descriptions like:

  • Angry Girlfriend.
  • Evel Knievel.
  • Off Road.
  • High Gear.

You get the idea. Or you could write a short story, if you prefer.

Never park your bike and then leave it in January in Minnsota!

Velocipede velocity

(Dude...I was hitting a good stride and rockin' the tunes on my iPod and dude, man...shouldn't have been reviewing physics at the same time dude...)

PeeWee's Misadventure - my favorite :-]

Weak attempts:

Bridge Out
No Exit
Bikeracks Needed

Wheels in the sky don't keep turnin'

Look it
Bike High
Peddle harder
GOIN NOWHERE

Maybe all our sentences should be only two words. Perhaps we would choose them more carefully

Dale, Isn't Bill Staines one who plays a right hand guitar left handed? Just came to mind as you and Billy are talking.

Posted by Joe in St Louis Park | March 19, 2009 8:27 AM

Right you are, Joe.
It's easy for Bill Staines, as a left hander, to play any right hander's guitar. He just flips it over.
If I'd thought of it, I would have asked Billy why he didn't do the same thing, since he was re-learning the instrument anyway.

Billy - thanks for playing in Albert Lea recently - hope you'll be back again soon.

Bird alert: I just saw a male Northern Harrier aka Marsh Hawk fly across my meadow...whence came the name of my farm: Marsh Hawk Meadow.

Now I KNOW it's spring.

Hearing Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy" reminded me of one of my favorite poems:

"Motto"
by Langston Hughes

I stay cool, and dig all jive,
That's the way I stay alive.
My motto,
as I live and learn,
is
Dig and be dug
In return.

And Dale and Mike, thanks for "Waters of March", another of my favorite poems!!

Aww Dale...I am just listening to the rebroadcast, and I have to say thanks for "On the Amazon!" I had that album when I was in Jr. High and I memorized and laughed at the lyrics so many years ago. I will tell you that those hungry menopause jaws are frightening me much more now than they did then!

Okay, since I was compelled to post, here is a tree bike haiku:

Wheelie on treetop
Branches in blue wilderness
Springing mystery

I think that perhaps my previous entries were a bit too poetic.
If we are filling out the end-of-shift police report, we need to consider:

Unrequited Love
Second Chances
Unicyler's Revenge
Former Spouses
Parking Protests
College Pranks
Sorority Initiations
Road Rage
Charioteer's Reincarnations
and
Sherpa's Dreams.

Well- perhaps I'm being a bit too silly now.
But sometimes-
silly works.

Thanks for the great photo Gus!

Damn, I forgot about the two word limitation.

Okay, then High Velocity.

Or Tour d'Bois (cheating with the apostrophe, I know).

Breaking Away (tribute to the best cycling movie ever).
