Last Thursday a discussion developed around Barb of Blackhoof's photo of the goats Alba and Dream. Wouldn't it be nice, we wondered, if goat-themed thank you gifts became a Radio Heartland tradition.
Friday I posted the Alba & Dream photo and an image of the "official" Heartland mug with the suggestion that someone might want to come up with a goat mug.
Who wouldn't want to have one?
Daniel Krumholz of Winona is sure this is how Alba and Dream would enjoy a mammoth mug o' Heartland Hooch.
Barb, our devoted goat tender, sees the goat mug looking something like this.
And obviously I had nothing at all to do on Sunday afternoon.
Radio Heartland listeners are certainly resourceful when it comes to inventing membership week premiums.
We've also had the rather macabre idea floated for a CD of funeral music with the title "Music To Die For". I assume we are talking about songs to be played in honor of the deceased at a funeral? And Is that something you buy for yourself, or is it a hint-hint gift for someone who isn't feeling well?
Any other bright ideas? What have you always wished your public radio station would use to lure you into the warm ebrace of membership?
I can't promise anything, but it doesn't hurt to brainstorm, especially if someone comes up with the perfect thank you gift that will help some future drive end successfully.
Morning Dale & Mike. Morning Heartlanders. As much as it proves I may not have much of a life, I was actually thinking about this over the weekend. How about RH suspenders, for supporting our musical tastes? Or little shovel keychains, since we've proven ourselves "shovel-ready"? And to go with our mugs, matching bowls w/ Alba and Dream on them?
Great creativity with the goat mugs, Daniel, Barb & Dale. (My creativity bucket has a hole in it.) Can't wait to hear more ideas for membership premiums!
Ooo Sherrilee, love the RH suspenders idea!
Good Monday morning all...I am so impressed with the goat mugs...I love the caption "move over..." and the photo on Barb's mug, but I have to confess I like most Dale's result of having "nothing to do" on a Sunday afternoon.
And Sherrilee...suspenders...what a brilliant idea..Alba on one and Dream on the other!
I put my mind on standby mode over the weekend...
good morning All - got my chuckle already this morning with Dale's, Daniel's, Sherrilee's great contributions.
this morning i'm visiting a friend in mpls so won't have much access to the program (no HD radio yet). and, for the first time in a year thanks to my unwilling farmer husband, i won't be in the barn to care for the animals this morning. right now he is probably trying to feed, water and keep order. BEHAVE YOU KIDS!!
i hope everyone listening, blogging helps keep this cool "community" of Heartland fed also. where else could we find the interesting music and fun, interactive forum that Dale and Mike have created? wear your suspenders proudly!
Good morning RH,
Well, since no one responded last week to my, "Goats Float Our Boats", how about this slogan with a Martha Stewart flair:
"Radio Heartland is Goatesque - It's a Good Thing!"
I'd be happy with any of the mugs. Boxer shorts with the logo sprawled across the rear would be hard to resist.
forgot to say - the throat singers (women from Tuva) cancelled the concert last night, so we did not get our fix (the reason i came down to mpls). Dale, would you be so kind to provide a bit of throat singing for us? thanks so much
Membership premiums of my dreams included (way back when) an "Incredible Betty" t-shirt complete with cape.
Where is Incredible Betty now?
hey, gang--
love the coffee mugs! so much fun to see--
re Music to Die For, i had been thinking of it as something one would buy for oneself as part of funeral planning, so the music you like is available for your funeral/memorial, as a convenience for your family...but i wasn't thinking of it as a membership premium so much as simply a product...you gotta think baby boomers would go for that kind of CD! i've certainly been to enough funerals where they played music i would NOT want to have... ah, well, perhaps it IS morbid of me!
thank you for the Muppets, the rainbow song from that record is also lovely, maybe you could play that soon also
trying to get into the goat thing but with 2 dogs and a puppy on the way i am more focused on how to efficiently pick up dog hair
a slogan idea for goat's bandanas---This is not a deer (in French, if anyone knows the French for "deer")--the mix of fine art and down-to-earthness would be cool.
also, bandanas could be a cool premium...although maybe not in blaze orange...
Good Morning!
Great ideas on the mugs! I love the creativity we are seeing here so I will toss in my slogan idea:
"Goats Gone Wild!"
which I'm pretty sure Barb will see as a bad thing sure to create havoc on the farm but my Border Collie is always looking for work and would be delighted to help out. I don't know that I have heard of goats being herded but since he has been practicing on our cats he should be up for the task.
Throat singing (goat singing?), yea for Dale & thanks Barb for the request!
Thank you for playing more world music!
Oh, I think blaze orange bandanas with goats on them would be perfect - we'd be able to recognize each other so easily.
I love the mugs, and since suspenders seem to be making a comeback, they would be very nifty!
Happy Monday, everyone!

Good Morning Heartlanders:
I was up late watching the entire Oscar ceremony last night, so I'm late getting on this morning. What a great show! Hugh Jackman is such an awesome talent -- and he proclaimed that Musicals are back! Yay!
Anyway, love all the goat-themed mugs, the suspenders idea sounds great -- I could use a RH-goat themed tank top to wear under my karate uniform. Don't like t-shirts.
Your friend, Joanne J
Good morning Heartlanders,
There are so many creative people listening to Radio Heartland!
What about a refrigerator magnet with a picture of Captain Billy's ship in full sail with the caption "Radio Heartland" appearing above the ship and "Living the Good Life" on the bottom of the magnet. or "Radio Heartland" above the ship and "Will Capture your Heart, etc.
Hi All,
A side note here about our other topic today-Music To Die For. Laura Gibson just released a new album called "Beast of Seasons" broken into 2 themes-Communion Songs and Funeral Songs. I thought it an interesting coincidence, great minds thinking and all. My own choice for the funeral compilation is Into The Mystic by Van Morrison.
I'd like to request, Billy Bragg's, Waiting for the Great Leap Forward, on the funeral cd. If I make it into the afterlife, it really will be a leap!
Some of us at the barn we volunteer were talking about having a goat in to visit our horses....Maybe we could name goat Jen the cuke... in honor of our favorite human. Pickles can come by too!
Cuke and Pickles, what a combo! Sour on the idea? Oh well!!! Just Gherkin around....
As to the statement:
Barb, our devoted goat tender
It might well be that Barb, might be tender to our devoted goats.....
Or maybe she is tenderly devoted to the goat!!!!
I just now finished listening to the Morningshow best bits podcast for the finale.... Too fun!!!!
I need coffee!
Has anyone requested "Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music? Seems perfect for the conversations about goats and musicals.
As to premiums... what about photoshopping a goat onto a heart, on a tee... or having the above goat and heart imbedded in an outline of the map of MINNESOTA
A long time ago, I got a video for my cat, called Video Catnip... We could do something that the goats could watch... (though I don't know what moving thing would interest them...)
OR. What about a video of farm animals for those of us who do not live in rural MN, so we could watch the critters... yet not have to move there to have the experience.
In honor of Hugh Jackman's proclamation that the "Musical is Back" on the Oscar ceremony opening number, I second the request for the "Lonely Goatherd" from the Sound of Music.
I would also like to hear some other musical number like "Hello Dolly." The movie Wall-E used a love song from Hello Dolly as an integral part of the movie music to wonderful effect. Not my favorite song, but you gotta love a show-stopper like the actual song "Hello Dolly!" Could we hear that song, please?
Thanks for your consideration. Your faithful listener,
Joanne J
Can you "third" a request? I'd love to hear the Lonely Goatherd too.
I would like to "fourth" that request!!!
Good afternoon. I've been way to busy at work to even pop in to see the blog. I even missed the show. Tomorrow I will have to do better.
I would like to "fourth" that request.
I thought this was tacky at the time, but a few Christmas's back, noticed one of those musical toys that makes a real "musical" racket when you push a button. They actually had a goat singing... you guessed it "Lonely Goatherd". I have a friend who LOVES "Sound of Music" and thought about buying it for her...
If we could find the manufacturer... we could use those as premiums!!!
On the funeral music theme - I'm intriqued by the suggestions for songs to be included on the Music to Die for CD, many of which I am unfamiliar with. I personally like the idea as a way to help a family at a stressful time and as a way to express values that were important in a life well lived. Maybe before we commit to having these songs "pressed" we could have a song review day. How about All Saints/Day of the Dead this November? I know its a long time to wait - but whats the hurry is this department????
PS - Love the mugs!
Unfortunately, I'm not as big a fan of goats as many other RH listeners. I do, however, think that the suspenders and Captain Billy magnet are nifty ideas.
Re: Music To Die For. How about Lyle Lovett's "Since the Last Time"? It could work if you wanted music about funerals.
Thanks for playing the throat singers and the Muppets! Where else could we hear such a great mix? And thanks for offering the Final Morning Show cd set! I can't wait to get my copy! It'll be a great reminder of that cold morning, sitting in the church sharing that bittersweet experience with so many other devoted fans. What I particularly look forward to hearing again are "You Are My Sunshine" and the skit about being licked to death by cats. so funny...
As to the music to die for.....How about "I Have had Singing" off one of Chanticleer's earlier albums.
As to premiums....How about resurrecting the Keepers CDs from the Pre-Current times? I like the idea of a HouseKeepers CD (I mentioned this to Dale once just before the keepers went away to make way for Current Live).
I love the "Radio Goatland" mug; I also love bandanas with "this is not a deer" on them. (My dog could wear it, too.)
A few months ago I made a list of songs I'd like played at my funeral (I'm fine, thanks): Send in the Clowns (Judy Collins), American Tune (Paul Simon); and Into the West (Annie Lennox).
