Rub-a-dub-dub

Two men in a tub, actually.

I missed this one in all the excitement leading up to inauguration day, but apparently the Australian authorities rescued a couple of guys who spent almost a month floating around the South Pacific in a freezer - the only survivors of a shipwreck.
When you look at the picture, you have to wonder how these young Burmese gentlemen, Ko Ko Oo and Haung Htaik, managed to make it.

They claim to have survived on rainwater and meals regurgitated by sea birds.

My questions:

  • What do you talk about after the first ten days or so?
  • How does anyone sleep?
  • How do you convince a passing sea bird to give up some pre-digested fish?

I know our economy is bad and the weather is turning frosty again, but after reading their story, I'm feeling better about snow and ice and am not as eager for a south seas cruise as I was just a few days ago.

What questions would you have for Ko Ko and Haung?

good morning,Dale andMike.

I've been thinking I haven't heard John Hartford for ages and "Rub-a-dub-a-dub" reminded me of his song about the washing machine...then Eric Bibb comes on singing about too much stuff and I think of John's song about not being able to throw anything away...any chance for a John Hartford song this morning...any song. Thanks.

Mornin' Heartlanders,
Funny you should bring this story up on this particular morning. Today I'm leaving for the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise - one week of non-stop music from Taj Mahal, Irma Thomas, John Hammond, James Hunter and many more - all while cruising around the Caribbean. The plans have been in the works for about 5 years. I'll send you all a toast and special thoughts from the sunrise pary next Thursday, and tell you all the highlights when I get back. Stay warm.

Dale,

Its so good to hear your 'live' voice! The alarm goes off at 5 am at our household, so for the first hour I live to Jasper while lying in bed, then I hear your voice announce the time at 6 am and say something witty and its as if my eyes light up- which of course they really don't, since they are closed, but I know I've got some good listening coming up.

Congrats on learning some new skills too. I like the photo of the two men in a freezer. Maybe they had some food in that freezer to help them out for a few days- causing the birds to start following them? One wonders.

How about a Greg Brown song- Driftless or Canned goods?

This story sounds "fishy." What happened to the rest of the folks from their boat?

Next you'll be telling us they stirred their coffee with their thumbs.

*listen, not live

That photo... a situation that would try even the best of friendships. It would be kind of fun to ask for captions. Mine would read something like: "Isn't it nice to see the former president and his vice already taking up sailing together?"

A note about the Time Jumpers: their weekly Monday night gig at The Station Inn in Nashville is consistently one of the hottest tickets in town. They frequently have guest artists like Vince Gill sitting in with them. I've yet to get over there, though--I will one of these days.

Good Morning Heartlanders!

Having recently moved from a large home in a rural setting to a small home in the city, I can totally relate to having too much stuff! Great start to the day's tunes, as usual!

As for the guys in the boat, the story sounds pretty odd and the point in the article about how they could keep their supply of fresh water clean. Perhaps the too much stuff theme can be tied back to these sailors with the Sara .... Stout and her refusal to take the garbage out.

As for captions, I would supplement Donna's comment "... with all their supporters."

How about a song by the Drifters...

Thanks Dale and Mike!

Thank you for John Hartford.

Mark...Sarah Sylvia Cynthia Stout and the garbage song came to my mind as well. Garrison used to play it often in the really early days of the LGMS. I haven't heard it in years and years.

Thanks Dale,
The sailing/Caribbean songs are perfect to accompany my last-minute preparations. I'll be thinking of all of the Heartlanders from the "Great Big Boat".

Hi Dale-
Am enjoying the dog songs this a.m. as we got to sleep in this a.m. since there is no school in St Paul. To go along with that theme, I am wondering if you still have Bark In the Dark and Ann Reed's The Mailman's Coming song where the dog barks and the cat couldn't care less... On another note, are there any songs that would be good for Winter Carnival?

Good morning Dale,

I just wanted to let you know we are looking forward to Sat nights show. We heard most of the first weeks show and really enjoyed it.
Last week we were at a dinner party and they had the show on but there was so much visiting going on we didn't hear much of it.
Two questions for you, who are you having as a guest this week? And do you do the show live? If not, when do you tape it?

Thanks for all you do to keep us conected to all this great music....keep up the good work.

Dale, I think all you need to do to get a bird to regurgitate a fish for you is to act like a baby bird.

But I also think this smells, I mean sounds fishy.

Sorry, they lie like a bad rug. No sun burn, no dehydration, etc. Perhaps 5 hours felt much longer than it was. Anyone who fishes will tell you how long it takes to burn from the sun reflecting off the water.

I'm wondering how they got the freezer out of the ship and what happened to the lid? did they first off dis-resemble it so they wouldn't accidentally lock themselves in? You know how they used to always warn kids not to play in old refrigerators? maybe there's a similar risk to playing in a freezer. then again, maybe they were playing in the freezer to begin with and that's why they survived the ship wreck. here they were sneaking frozen cherries from the freezer and trying not to get caught and the next thing they know they're floating and everyone, everything else, is gone. it could happen

I think I have now heard it all. "Love Letter on a Fish?"

Where do you find these songs? The variety is simply beyond reality.

Thanks for bringing me a smile this morning.

Thanks, skeptics and believers alike, for your comments on the two men in the tub. Intriguing situation. If it's a ruse, why? So far, Christi has the best explanation - stealing food from the freezer and ooops! Kitchen overboard!

Kate, the guests this Saturday night on MPR News will be Richard Julian and Sasha Dobson. I've been a fan for a while and jumped at the chance to interview them last Sunday when they performed at the Dakota.
As you may deduce from that, the weekend show is recorded. Mike and I put the two hours together during the week and the very nice people who have to work Saturday night push the buttons to make it play back.

Thanks for your response Dale....

And I'd like to say, that's a load off my mind. I was a little worried about you morning guys doing a late night show, sometimes we can't make it all the way to 11 pm. even on a Sat night!
It would be awesome if some day the show could be rebroadcast on Sunday the way they do PHC.

Fred, I have to admit, "Love Letter on a Fish" took me by surprise too. I assumed it wouldn't be very good. Glad I listened anyway!

here's a little something re the white house dog, dale, which you mentioned today---

there's a bit of a movement to have them adopt a shelter dog, not support puppy mills, etc....
