On Thanksgiving Day, many Americans take stock of the blessings in their lives. Today's Question: What are you thankful for?

My health is poor and it's gotten quite a bit worse this year. I think it's because of that challenge that I have so much gratitude for almost everything. My heart swells over very small things all the time. I'm so grateful for my fantastic children, my partner of 18 years, my church and the wonderful friends I've made there, my siblings, good weather, and my gardens that give me energy while exhausting me. Everyday, everywhere I'm filled with thankfulness for the wonders that surround me.

I'm thankful that I'm not beset by paranoid, delusional fears of an impending socialist takeover of America.

For being raised by my parents to be a good citizen. To pay my taxes, make charitable contributions, serve on jury duty when called upon, participate in the electoral process, educate my children, and to do it all without whining.

I'm thankful that I have enough to be generous with.

Having a job which allows me to support my family and keep our home. We must remember that there are fewer and fewer fortunate people as a result of this depression. Count the small blessings first.

@ Susie
I was referring to the Question posed on this thread.
Take a moment and review the question Susie. It was about Thanksgiving and Americans. I didn't see anything referring to European or other ethnic holidays/festivals. As best as I can tell, Thanksgiving is uniquely "American"....

Gotta go check the bird now...
Cheers to you and yours!!

Hansen, I am thankful that I am reminded that only white men have caused all the problems in the world. And I am sad that we are never reminded that other nationalities/color/creeds have killed or plundered or taken the lands of same nationalities/color/creeds. Or am "i bad" for not begging for forgiveness? But I am thankful for all the beauty that is around us and all those who work to make this a better country and a better people - all people.

Other than lamenting the white man's plundering, murdering, colonizing ways (ask an Iroquois) what else is there to say to take the fun out of the national day of gluttony here in the home of the bravely obese? Plenty!

No doubt, expressing gratitude is generally a healthy and appropriate practice. Indeed, my sense is that Americans too rarely acknowledge the debt they owe to other people and other influences. There ought to be more thanks giving.

Nonetheless, the norm of Thanksgiving seems to be to encourage a particular kind of gratitude — a generic thankfulness for the status quo. Indeed, when one looks at what many describe as the true meaning of the holiday, the message is generally one of announcing that current arrangements — good and bad — are precisely as they should be.

I am thankful for our troops and my family that risked their lives to ensure our freedoms. I am thankful for MPR and Talk Radio 1300AM and Fox News for without those outlets the truth would stay hidden and our country would follow the terrible path that led to the likes of Stallin and Che Guevera and Hugo Chavez. I am thankful for our 1st and Second amendments for without those we would be forced to live under a dictatorship. I am thankful for the conservative party ideals for without that their would be only one voice of Progressives gone unchecked as our Universities do today to our youth.

My family. If they are happy and healthy, I am good, you can have all the rest. If they are not, there would not be enough left in the world to fill the void.

Let me share this "grace" I plan on using today at my family's table.

"We drink from wells we did not dig and we are warmed by fires we did not light. As we pause over this good food, we remind ourselves of gifts freely given by those who have loved us, taught us, and sacrificed for us. We give thanks for all of life's blessings."

I am thankful for commenters like Larry M. (and the exploited Chinese workers who made the keyboard upon which he types).

Today is the day to try to forget the qualifiers and caveats of our lives and remember to be thankful for a world's nature whose beauty and bounty sustains us, for living in a nation where free thought and free speech is written into its constitution and where liberty and justice for all and equal protection under the law are its goals. Happy Thanksgiving!
