Funniest movie of all time?
Posted at 2:57 PM on November 6, 2006 by Stephanie Curtis (16 Comments)
A few critics, including Colin Covert of the Star Tribune, think that Borat may be the funniest movie of all time. It's easily the funniest movie of the year and a classic comedy, but I still can't hand out the top-of-the-heap-of-all-time award. Maybe because it doesn't have the character development of serious contenders for the top spot like Some Like It Hot, Dr. Strangelove or Groundhog Day.
At this exact moment, my vote for funniest movie of all time goes to Spinal Tap.

The funniest movie of all time is "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday"
starring and directed by Jacques Tati. So there.

A movie I never lose interest in is, History of the World, Part 1 by Mel Brooks. The best ever!

It's great, but it's no match for THE BIG BUS.

I love Mr. Hulot's Holiday. Though I'm more partial to the follow-up, Mon Oncle.
There are too many funny movies to pick one, but one of my favorites is "Leningrad Cowboys Go America". A very funny Finnish film about a fictitious band of farmers with giant pointy pompadours that go to America and travel across the country to play "rock and roll".
Unfortunately, it's out of print and not on DVD that I'm aware of yet.

If you haven't watch, "A Mighty Wind." you are missing sore ribs from laughing! Another funniest --and sexiest is "Chocolat"

My vote is for "The 40-Year-Old Virgin". I can't recall laughing so hard at a movie before, and I'm a bit of a comedy buff.

My vote is for Planes Trains and automobiles, with John Candy and Steve Martin. This is my all time favorite, I don't know why it doesn't get more credit.

Tommy Boy...when you can watch a movie over and over again, and laugh harder every time you watch it or think about it...it's truly a classic.

Oh, it's not even close. The funniest movie of all time is Earth Girls Are Easy. With lines like "I want to be a veterinarian because I love children" (Beauty Queen acceptance speech), and "Norway is the capital of Finland" (Valley Girl instructing alien about Earth geography), plus visual mime gags from a young Jim Carrey, nothing compares.

This is Spinal Tap, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Clerks, Stripes, Zoolander, and Annie Hall..these would be my picks. I wouldn't place Borat in the top 100, but it's all about personal taste.

Maybe I'm thinking more of the book, but I thought "Catch 22" was very funny.

The funniest movie of all time has to be Trading Places starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd. The movie was a collage of contradictions! Rich vs poor, opportunity vs neglect. It came at a time when people were looking at the stock market as their financial salvation. Who can ever forget the Dukes or the surreptitious and devious Clarence Beaks. This movie was a social commentary on the state of the day, packaged in laughter and pure comic genius.

The single funniest movie is a very difficult concept, since there are brands and kinds of comedy.
Dr Strangelove is, for me, the epitome of the "Black" comedy.
"When Harry Met Sally" is, for me, the epitome of "Romantic" comedy
And then there are the ones which are sui generis or don't fill niches--The Princess Bride, Real Genius, Monty Python (and the movie of your choice).
And funniest takes time. A comedy which still makes you laugh a decade later is a comedy for the ages.

Dr. Strangelove, hands down. If only for "You can't fight in here. This is the war room." Slim Pickens reading out the contents of the survival kit was pretty good, too.

If you didn't catch it, the New York Times recently did a piece called On a Desert Island... which asked 22 funny people the same question: Which five comedies would you want to take with you if you were stranded alone on a desert island?
