The best scene from a musical...
Posted at 3:34 PM on September 7, 2006 by Stephanie Curtis (2 Comments)
The American Film Institute came out with their list of the top 25 musicals of all time. 'Singin' in the Rain" is number one. It deserves to be there. "The Bandwagon" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are also in there, so I am fine with the list (although #6 "Mary Poppins" has always freaked me out.)
Now, it doesn't deserve to be on the list for Best Musical, but "The Harvey Girls" has a scene that only Gene Kelly and some lamp posts can top: Judy Garland performing "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Sante Fe." The singing, choreography and sheer charisma displayed by Judy Garland, a crowd of extras and a train are a wonder to see every time.

Grab your coat and get your hat....
I agree - it's a great tune. Woo-woooooo.
Mary Poppins freaked you out, eh? Was it the bit where Jane and Michael are magically making the nursery tidy, and the drawers are opening and closing all willynilly and that creepy jack-in-the-box clown thing keeps springing up?

I didn't check the list, but have to throw in two of my faves. West Side Story... Officer Krupke ... and "I Like to be in America" are both amazing numbers....also, Jesus Christ Superstar.."In the Garden of Gethsemane" and "He is Dangerous" are both stunning.
Why in the world did Mary Poppins freak you out?
