Underrated movies

Posted at 11:43 AM on May 25, 2006 by Stephanie Curtis (6 Comments)

I got an e-mail from Tim who sent me his list the most underrated movies of the last 25 years. Here's Tim's list:

1) The Abyss 2) Lone Star 3) Big Night 4) Defending Your Life 5) Before Sunrise 6) The Boxer 7) Sliding Doors 8) Flirting with Disaster 9) Bottle Rocket 10) The Iron Giant

I totally agree with number 10. "The Iron Giant" is a wonderful, smart film.

Body Heat
Lost in America
Racing with the Moon
Close-up
Naked
Ruby in Paradise
I Heart Huckabee's
Pitch Black
The Iron Giant
American Job
Two Family House
Together
Out of Time

That's off the top of my head. These are movies that not enough people saw that I think a lot of people would like.

I know a lot of people have seen "Body Heat" but I put it on this list because I thought that not enough people think of it as a classic.

Underrated is ambiguous. How about under-seen. Say $10 million box office but still a great movie. Here are my picks:
Requiem for a Dream
Waking Life
The Cube
Swimming Pool
Battle Royal
Runaway Train
Bitter Moon
Choose Me
Happiness
The Dreamers
After Hours
Metropolitan
Crash (Cronenberg, 1996)
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

Warning, most of these movies are twisted and unfit for un-hardened tastes.

I agree with you on Iron Giant and Pitch Black.

Some Movies I would add:

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

What Dreams May Come

Dead Again

Donnie Darko

I thought Ruby in Paradise was a great film, also.

I recommend The Station Agent, have you seen it?

Hmmmm... yes, some good films
Here's a few (though some may already be considered classic...):

Road to Perdition
Ran
Dreams
Chinatown
Gas, Food, and Lodging
Cinema Paradiso
Wings of Desire
My Life as a Dog
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Short Cuts
Step Into Liquid

...and many more...

This is irresistable. My two cents:

Barry Lyndon
Gattaca
Triplets of Belleville
Bedazzled (Donen, 1968; no DVD release in sight)
To Die For
Pecker
The Last Shot
Mistress
Quick Change
Tin Men

Bedazzled! I love Bedazzled. I saw it a few years ago projected in my friend's backyard.

I actually think that the remake was pretty good. It definitely had a classic opening credit sequence.
