Oak Street

REVISION: I thought they had a two for one deal. Unfortunately, you need to print up a coupon from an e-mail they sent out. Sorry if I got anyone excited. The film is worth full price, though...
The Oak Street is showing one of my favorite movies from last year, "The Squid and the Whale." They've got a deal for the tonight and tomorrow...you buy one ticket, you get one free. It's a bargain, plus you'll be seeing a great movie and supporting a great theater. "Squid" is up for a screenwriting Oscar, but Jeff Daniels should have been too.
I remember the movie as a comedy, my boyfriend thinks it's a tragedy. You go and decide. I think it depends on whether you essentially see life as a comedy or tragedy.

I say it's both a comedy & a drama (the final scene makes it impossible for me to say tragedy).
But we all know the label doesn't matter.
Oak Street films do not need to to forced into a genre category. It's fun to see the quirky films wiggle out of any known classification system.
Laura Linney turned in a stand-out performance.
I hope the Oak Street survives. IMO the arts world squanders money on much less accessible, less worthy projects.

I would say drama w/dark comedic elements. I enjoyed the performances a lot in Squid, but the self-absorption of the characters made it difficult for me to sympathize with them.
I agree with Skip abt the Oak, I dig that little theater. (And fyi, I think they turned up the heat in the auditorium :)
