Grow up Owen

I was really looking forward to seeing "The Wedding Crashers." Even though the hype surrounding it was a little annoying. I'm talking about the article after article about how it was a rated-R comedy and a throwback to the days of "Stripes" and, ummmm, "Porky's," I guess. Anyway, it was supposed to be a good movie for adult audiences and I was happy to be seeing it.

But it wasn't really a throwback to movies that were made to make adults laugh. It's got that illness that so many Hollywood comedies have, a boring good guy at it's center. It's afraid to have completely unlikeable leads. "Old School" centered around dull Luke Wilson. This movie spends most the time around sincere, misty-eyed Owen Wilson. I want the movie to go all out and have crazy, irresponsible Vince Vaughn in the lead not a sweet, waffly, surfer dude. Granted in real life, Owen Wilson's John would make a better boyfriend, but this was a movie and I want to be entertained. Imagine if half of "Animal House" was devoted to Katy and Boon finding true romance and learning to grow up. Yech.

Not only that, but Owen Wilson was creepily too old for the part. They do acknowledge it in the script a few times, but I think the guy is getting close to 40 and this should have been for an actor getting close to 30. He has weathered, crinkled eyes and looks like Cybill Shepherd in "Moonlighting." Stiff, overly-styled blonde hair. A little too much foundation and rouge. It was downright creepy. the next movie he makes, they'll have to pull out the soft focus so he can pass for a decade younger than he is.

Once again, I must sing the praises of "Dodgeball." A dumb, fun movie that does not have any redeeming message or character. Just laugh after laugh.

I must agree that this was a VERY funny movie and that Owen Wilson does look a bit too old to be doing this move. Kinda creepy.
