Gov. Dayton had some harsh words for his neighbor, Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker. On Wednesday, Walker posted this to Twitter in reaction to Dayton's budget plan.
"In '11, IL raised taxes on income by 66% & businesses by 46%. Now MN Gov is proposing a $2 bil tax increase. WI is Open for Business."
On Thursday, Dayton was asked about Walker's comments after his speech to the Minnesota Newspaper Association. He said Walker didn't have much to brag about.
"Gov. Walker's economy is faring far worse than Minnesota's over the last couple of years," Dayton said. "I would suggest Gov. Walker focus on his problems, and we'll deal with bettering Minnesota."
Dayton insisted that there is no correlation between tax levels and job growth or per capita income. He cited statistics from the Minnesota Taxpayer's Association saying Minnesota has higher job growth than Wisconsin.
Walker shouldn't talk- he can't even budget accurately for keeping up the maintenance on our roads.
I like the idea of Scott Walker moving to Minnesota and becoming their governor instead of ours!
The effect of Republican ideologues in high office reveals itself slowly in declining education systems, deteriorating infrastructure, chronic budget problems, etc. But once established, these GOP cancers tend to persist.
Minnesotans should expect recovery from Tim Pawlenty's two terms of nonfeasance to take years. Wisconsin under Walker will fare even worse. Governor Dayton recognizes the difficult path required to fight our way back to prosperity. Wisconsin's Walker wouldn't recognize good government if it bit him in the butt.
Awe look at the sour Liberals That have to "PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE OF BENEFITS" Ever since Scott Walker took office like the rest of us. YOU MAD LIBERALS?????
Sorry Mr Murphy, we are not complaining at all. If anyone is "sour" it is the GOP who got its clock cleaned last Nov.
Hey Paul, Why don't you get the facts straight. Doyle raided the road funds the whole time he was in office. You people never get anything right and then blame others just like Bam. Dustin, you hit it on the head, these crybabies should run a business once and then tell me how bad they have it. I have to pay twice the FICA and SS they do. I have to pay my own health insurance. I have to pay for my own retirement and all they can cry about it the little bit of personal contribution they have to pay "themselves" .Libs live in fairy tale land!
If you think we've proved how smart we are, because sanity has returned to MN politics and the recovery that Governor Dayton has initiated is likely to continue, please remember that Dustin Murphy's vote counts just as much as yours.
Dustin has plenty of friends out there, too, working hard to push Scott Walker-style recklessness and chaos into MN government. If we don't work equally hard to keep intelligent government in place, Dustin and his friends will be more than happy to turn Minnesota into a cold Louisiana.
Hey Dustin, in two years when Minnesota has had strong job growth and Wisconsin is lagging behind will you rationally look at the numbers and reconsider the philosophy you hold so dear? Or will you just grab another cup of "tax cut, trickle down" kool-aid?
Governor Walker not only balanced the budget while reducing property taxes, he also created a surplus at year end. Most important he empowered local government to take care of students and residents, instead of being forced to bow down to special interest unions. There's only one way out of this economic mess we are in, and its policies like Walkers that are leading the country. Minn could learn a thing or two from Wi.
As a former Minnesotan (10 years ago) I will say that Minnesota has a handle on things. Their economy has been strong for as long as I can remember with awesome jobs and wages. We always made fun of Wisconsin because of its backwoods politics. Now that I live in WI and both my wife and I got totally screwed into paying everyone's debt off in this state, (As 2 public education employees) because teachers are so "rich", I feel that Wisconsin is not going anywhere but down unless Walker is released of his duty along with all of the other idiot Republican servants. Sometimes I wonder why people didn't listen to the well educated teachers and professors in this state when Walker was recalled. Well, enjoy the awesome ride downward spiral. We told ya so!
Notice what Gov Dayton says doesn't need a stick of proof...and he doesn't provide any. Wisconsin HAS done better in most of the economic statistics in the last 2 years...this is a fact. I remember when we used to talk about the facts once.
Actually, Wisconsin will be minding Minnesota's business as Uline opens a new facility in Hudson, thereby relocating 150 jobs from Eagan, MN. Uline cited "fewer government regulations" as one reason for the relocation. http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2011/12/16/gov-walker-uline-groundbreaking-hudson.html
Talk is cheap, Governor Dayton.
Walker increased spending and kicked the can down the road. He derided Doyle for using Cash Accounting rather than GAAP, yet that's how he shows his surplus. Let's see it using GAAP.
Minnesota's governor doesn't have a criminal defense fund (the first in the state's history) like Wisconsin's has. Your illegal commingling of campaign and state-funded staff will catch up with you eventually, Scott Walker
Dayton has no idea how to balance a budget without jacking taxes, no Dem does.
@Adam...if you and your teachers union werent so ignorant, you'ld appauld Walker, he likely saved your job with his reforms. WI is the only state where pensions are FULLY funded. In WI you and the rest of the public tax suckers whine and moan, but have no idea about reality in the private sector. Go bang a bongo drum at the Capital and quite trying to turn our kids in wards of the Socialist Obama state.
Um, Rich, where are your facts - or statistics? I didn't see any listed or cited. I do know that Wisconsin is #42 in job growth, I don't know where MN is.
Especially for David .... Gov. Walker cut aid to public school kids (resulting in lost opportunities for quality education) by $800 million. The balanced budget you think is "swell" was balanced in the backs of kids. Opinions are great but facts can be painful.
Jean,
Of course you left out the important information that the owners of Uline donated over $100,000 to Scott Walker.
"Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, of Wake Forest, Ill., to donate $100,000 each to the Friends of Scott Walker campaign war chest. Richard Uihlein is owner and CEO of Uline Inc., a shipping and packaging company. Elizabeth Uihlein is president."
I'm sure that has NOTHING to do with why their moving jobs.
The malarky about there being "less regulations" is just a way they can try to con the working people into believing their Ayn Randian BS.
@Tom. CORRECTION. The 'cuts' as you refer to them as, were adjustments in collective bargaining (legalized taxpayer robbery) by the UNIONS. What Walkers reforms did was release local municipalities to manage their own budgets, rather than have the unions swallowing every penny...thus improving environments for kids, not hindering. Also the good teachers can be rewarded, the bad ones weeded out. When the 2010 WI teacher of the year gets the axe, because she doesnt have seniority, thats a problem. Walker fixed all of that without raising taxes. Thats your painful facts.
Congratulations...you've balanced the budget on the backs of the people teaching your kids how to read and your school children. I am a teacher who lived under a state law for over a decade that limited wage AND benefit increases to 3.6%. Nearly all of that percentage was taken up by increased healthcare costs, so we traded wage increases for benefits and now Wisconsin has come for the benefits. Teachers were already taking the hit for years before Walker and his puppet masters from outside the state declared war on the evil unions. I know, I know you will tell me about the harsh reality of the "real world." I've worked outside of education and served in combat, so save your talk about the "real world." Certainly education doesn't contribute any economic benefits to the state as a whole now does it. You and our "college dropout" governor...are so aware of what reality is. Mr. Walker has been sucking out of the public trough for as long as I've been teaching....so out of touch he was going to spend more than $100,000 (I actually think I am being conservative) on remodeling the kitchen in the governors mansion. What a hypocrite.
Who is Scott Walker to lecture Minnesota Governor Dayton on how to run his state? Minnesota is absolutely DESTROYING Walker's Wisconsin in ALL areas of economic growth.
While Wisconsin's economy spins downward due to the division and hatred that marks his reign in Wisconsin, Minnesota's economic engine is accelerating and creating thousands of good paying jobs in a knowledge economy, unlike Walker's Wississippi which is now 47th in the nation in new jobs created.
The bitter division and outright HATRED towards teachers in Wisconsin is a direct consequence of Scott Walker's DIVIDE and CONQUER. Hundreds of outstanding teachers have already left the HATRED in Wisconsin, many more are planning to leave a Wisconsin where the economic decline is causing such anger and hatred.
Friends don't let friends live in Wisconsin. The angry "Stand With Walker" supporters who have posted on this site are living proof of the level of anger and HATRED that pervades every corner of Wisconsin.
Minnesota residents take note: Wisconsin is an ugly example of what happens when you vote Republican.
Wisonsin residents get a $200.00 tax cut.............. and second rate 911 coverage in Milwaukee County, poorer schools, worse medical coverage for the poor and disabled, and they are "open for business"?
Sure, businesses, move to Wisconsin, Alabama of the North! You won't find well educated workers, but they'll be cheap and eager!
The amount of dis-information espoused by the left is phenomenal, and with it the complete loss of credibility. There are so many outright lies and union started rumors in these replies it would be a full time job just to debunk them all. I will reply to the one I just get sick and tired of hearing. The budget wasn't balanced "on the backs of kids" meaning taken from "education". You keep repeating this union created mantra and besides the fact that it is an outright lie it's sole purpose is to intentionally pull the emotional strings of the weak minded that were educated by the same system long before Walker took office. The budget was balanced (in part) by a take back of exorbitant benefits that had been heaped upon teachers mostly over the last 15 years and in return for the taxpayers generosity we received students that weren't being educated as much as indoctrinated.
The complete ignorance of even the most recent history is astounding by so many and downright scary when you consider that some of the most ignorant are teachers.
I'd be more interested to examine the sum total of tax credits, abatements, zero interest loans, etc., that Wisconsin has put on the table to any business considering relocation, and average that total against any projected net gain in jobs. My hunch is the incentives (see also: money) are so substantial, that even at full employment, it will take WI about 50 years to simply break-even on any deal. This is often money that would have seen better returns if invested in infrastructure and education, in the public commons. These CEO's must be laughing themselves all the way to the bank.
The posting by "South of Madistan" is completely illustrative of the BLINDING HATRED directed 24/7 towards Wisconsin teachers. Thanks for proving my point of the ugliness directed towards teachers in Wisconsin.
In Walker's Wisconsin, it is not uncommon for total strangers (of the ilk of South of Madistan) to get in the face of teachers who are eating in a restaurant and make comments like, "my tax dollars paid for that steak you are eating". Minnesotans, please look at the posts in this thread as instructive as to the consequences to the health & welfare of your state when your own politicians espouse "divide and conqueor" HATRED of others as the pathway to prosperity.
Wisconsin's current economic ranking of 47th in the nation in new jobs & economic development is proof positive that a state divided by HATRED will never succeed.
Truth be told, Wisconsin will lose teachers, their kids will have an inferior education, they will work for less and the rich will get richer. What a great deal! But beer and cheese are cheap.....
"Gov. Dayton doesn't have a criminal defense fund...."
The John Doe investigation is over. Walker was found to have done nothing wrong, obviously, since in America you're INNOCENT until proven guilty, not the other way around.
On the other hand, (1) Walker isn't a drug addict who has been to rehab on FOUR different occasions like Dayton has; (2) Walker doesn't stash his money in South Dakota so as he doesn't have to pay the very MN taxes that he proposes; and (3) Walker has never been a U.S. Senator who closed down his office and fled the city with his tail tucked between his legs over some hallucinatory (probably pill-induced) episode involving a delusional forth-coming terrorist act which led to the Democrat Party demanding him to not run for re-election.
To compare a family-oriented person like Scott Walker, who had to pull himself up from nothing, to a mentally unstable trust fund baby who is estranged from everyone in his own family accept from his socialite ex-wife whom he met in rehab and still bankrolls his campaigns is all the prima facie evidence that is needed to demonstrate how a lack of morals is the number one criteria to becoming a liberal.
Wow Allison, I stand corrected. Your post PROVES that Wisconsin does not have a monopoly on HATRED and RAGE. You are one angry person. Your HATRED of Gov Dayton sounds really personal. Wow.
You're all too funny. GOP this, Liberal that. You're both spitting on the same failed two party system. Keep going! You only have a short way to go until we hit national insolvency! Congrats! While you're so busy blaming the other guy for all of your ills the cheating elected leaders are stripping you of your wealth, your rights and your future! I hope your kids will be proud to inherit this mess.
