With Congress on recess, DFL Rep. Keith Ellison has headed to Turkey and Saudi Arabia on a trip with representatives of Minnesota businesses to promote the state's trade ties in the region.

According to Ellison spokesman Tim Schumann, "the goal here is to expand business opportunities for Minnesota."

The Turkish leg of Ellison's trip includes stops in Istanbul and the capital, Ankara, while the Saudi leg includes stops in Damman and the capital of Riyadh.

Ellison is joined by Katie Clark, head of the Minnesota Trade Office, and about half-a-dozen leaders of small and mid-sized Minnesota companies, including American TIme & Signal Company and Advanced Healing Systems.

This isn't Ellison's first time to the region on a trade-related trip, he led similar trips in 2009 and 2010.
