Republican gubernatorial hopeful Tom Emmer has scheduled a town hall forum on Thursday to focus on Veterans issues. The Emmer campaign says he'll speak at the Elk River American Legion. The focus of the campaign is to "do more than other states to convince retired veterans to live here."
The campaign may be working to continue the conversation over a plan that would exempt all military pay and pensions from state income taxes. The MNGOP criticized Democrat Mark Dayton last week for opposing the idea. Here's the info on the town hall from the campaign:

Veterans make a valuable contribution to every community in which they live. They start businesses, raise families and volunteer. With the absence of a military base in Minnesota, we have to do more than other states to convince retired veterans to live here. We also need to make sure all returning veterans have access to good jobs.

Emmer is also scheduled to tour a Sauk Rapids business on Thursday morning.
I predict a 100% chance that his proposals start, and probably end, with lower taxes.
Look, Minnesota is a pretty cold place to live. If veterans want to live in a warmer place, with lower taxes, they can easily do so. We can't compete on that. What we can compete on is everything else: recreation, culture, health care, even education for veterans that want to keep on learning. We won't be a cold Florida or Texas no matter how low we make our taxes, so why try? Let's focus on protecting our environment, improving health care, and making this a place that people come to because they can lead fulfilling lives that continue to provide opportunities for personal fulfillment, not zero income taxes.
Emmer, just like Pawlenty another chicken hawk who didn't feel the need to serve but now wants to play the big defender of servicemen. Phony.
Rep. Emmer says he's for veterans, but he supported the elimination of the GAMC program, which provided health care services to about 10,000 veterans. With "support" like Emmer's on GAMC, veterans don't need any more help from him. If Emmer really wants to help veterans, he should call for the restoration of GAMC.
