Molnau to back Emmer for governor

Posted at 9:04 AM on January 25, 2010 by Tom Scheck (1 Comments)

Lt. Gov. Carol Molnau will announce at a 1:30 news conference that she's backing State Rep. Tom Emmer for Governor. Emmer, of Delano, is seeking the GOP endorsement against a field of six other Republicans which include state Rep. Marty Seifert, state Sen. David Hann and former state Rep. Bill Haas.

Molnau's endorsement will help solidify conservative support for Emmer since she's just one of two Republicans who are holding statewide office (Gov. Pawlenty is the other). But it could also bring some baggage.

The Minnesota Senate rejected her confirmation as Transportation Commissioner. Senate Democrats said they didn't want her serving as both Lt. Governor and Transportation Commissioner but there were also concerns that she was commissioner when the I-35W bridge collapsed.

Bachmann wants ground rules for health care debate

Posted at 4:14 PM on January 25, 2010 by Tim Pugmire

Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann says new ground rules are needed in the debate over federal health care reform.

Democrats have passed separate health care bills in the House and Senate, but prospects for a final version are unclear. During a State Capitol news conference today, Bachmann said she and other Republican critics are proposing a set of principles called a "Declaration of Health Care Independence" that they want to Democrats to agree with.

"No more negotiations behind closed doors on health care," Bachmann said. "No more political bribes and payoffs going forward. No health care bill that would mean an increase in the federal deficit. No increase in any state deficits or debts, and no increase to individuals or to employers that would be in effect a tax."

Bachmann did not offer specific changes for the health care bill. She wants those issues resolved in future negotiations.

Meanwhile, one of the 6th district Democrats trying to unseat Bachmann this fall is holding a campaign kickoff event this week.

State Sen. Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud, says she will will formally launch her campaign Thursday at the State Capitol. Clark will then conduct a 6th district tour, with stops in Anoka, Buffalo, Elk River, Ham Lake, Oak Park Heights, St. Cloud, St. Joseph, Stillwater and Woodbury.

Dayton talks taxes, gambling, endorsement

Posted at 5:06 PM on January 25, 2010 by Tim Pugmire (1 Comments)

Former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton, a DFL candidate for governor, is offering new details about his "tax the rich" proposal.

Dayton has frequently talked on the campaign trail about increasing income taxes on the wealthiest 10 percent of Minnesotans. He says the change would bring fairness to the tax system and provide the state much-needed revenue for education and other essential services. During a wide-ranging session with reporters today, Dayton explained that he would propose adding three new income tax tiers. He also said households with income of $150 thousand and above would have to pay more.

["You've got three ways you can balance the budget," Dayton said. "You can raise taxes on the richest Minnesotans. You can raise taxes on the rest of Minnesotans, or you can pretend you're going to wave some magic wand and 5 to 7 billion is going to disappear from state spending without no consequence to anyone, which is the Republican answer right now, which belongs more on the comic page than it does on the front page."

A state Republican party official blasted Dayton for offering what he called an out of touch tax and spend philosophy.

Dayton also talked at length about his decision to bypass the DFL endorsement process, his support of an expansion of gambling and other issues. We'll post video of Dayton as soon it's converted.
