Emily's List backs Kelliher for gov

Emily's List, a political action committee focused on electing women to political office, announced today that it's backing Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher (DFL) for governor. Here's part of the news release:

"EMILY's List is proud to endorse Margaret Anderson Kelliher for Governor," said Ellen R. Malcolm, President of EMILY's List. "As Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Margaret has earned a reputation as a coalition builder, reaching across the aisle and working to make life better for all Minnesotans. She is a champion for women and families and has exactly what it takes to be elected Minnesota's first female Governor. EMILY's List is thrilled to support Margaret's campaign and stand with her as she makes history in 2010."

The group is a fundraising force for candidates - generating campaign contributions from its 100,000 members across the country. The group says it raised $43 million for its candidates in the 2008 election cycle.

Emily's List helped elect Amy Klobuchar to the U.S. Senate and Betty McCollum to Congress.

But their track record is mixed.

The group backed Ember Reichgott Junge for Congress in 2006 (Keith Ellison won the DFL primary and the election), Terri Bonoff for Congress in 2008 (she lost the DFL endorsement to Ashwin Madia who lost the general to Republican Erik Paulsen), Democrat Patti Wetterling for Congress in 2006 (who lost to Republican Michele Bachmann) and DFLer Rebecca Yanish for U.S. Senate in 2000. That was the year Mark Dayton (who is running for governor this year) won the election.
