State GOP irked by Peterson quote, wants apology

Posted at 2:06 PM on July 27, 2009 by Tim Pugmire (2 Comments)

Today's Politico story on the Obama birth certificate flap and other political conspiracy theories included a quote from Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson:

"Twenty-five percent of my people believe the Pentagon and Rumsfeld were responsible for taking the twin towers down," said Rep. Collin Peterson, a Democrat who represents a conservative Republican district in Minnesota. "That's why I don't do town meetings."

Peterson was not quoted again in the story.

Minnesota Republicans jumped on the comment, calling on Peterson to apologize. In a news release, Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Tony Sutton described Peterson's remarks as "outrageous and offensive." Sutton also said Peterson revealed just how out of touch and disconnected he has become in Washington.

Out of touch in Washington? As if any politician once elected is ever in touch with her/his constituents again.

One can paint anyone to be anything with enough sound-bite editing. The GOP needs to get back to trying to justify its position on health-care reform (well, it's not really reform, but that's a separate issue).

Any political party who starts pointing at the other side and screaming "look at him look at him" reminds me of my 5 year old trying to distract me from noticing his behavior.

Thirty-six percent of respondents overall from an August, 2006 Scripps Howard/Ohio University national poll of 1,010 adults said it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that federal officials either participated in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon or took no action to stop them "because they wanted the United States to go to war in the Middle East."

Is the MN-GOP complaining that Peterson is underreporting the number at only 25% ?
