Republicans have elected private businessman Tony Sutton as its new party chair. The delegates elected Sutton on the first ballot. He received 195 votes, radio personality Dave Thompson received 133 votes and former state Senator Carrie Ruud received 17 votes. Sutton said he's committed to rebuilding the Republican party.
The party chair is a critical part of the political process. Sutton will be responsible for recruiting and backing candidates, organizing grass roots support and turning out the vote in elections. 2010 is a critical year since there's an open race for Governor and every legislative seat is on the ballot.
