State spending site

Posted at 4:22 PM on March 26, 2009 by Tom Scheck (2 Comments)

We reported yesterday that Gov. Pawlenty was going to unveil a website that details state spending. Here's the link.

Question of the Day: I haven't dug into it yet. What do you think?

It just doesn't look all that useful, especially with some of the links broken.

Numbers with vendor names provides no actual information beyond knowing how much money the state gave to a particular vendor. It doesn't talk about what the contract was intended to do, nor whether it was fulfilled, nor whether the project met its goals.

Maybe if you spend a lot of time digging into it, you might find some worthwhile tidbits, but it feels like this is too much minutiae without enough context.

I'm a political junky. I like databases. I'm a Mac user and my browser is Safari. I can't access any of the state spending databases because they were designed for Internet Explorer ONLY. It's 2009. This kind of thing shouldn't be a problem. Every site should at minimum be designed for IE, Firefox and Safari. Ugh.

I'm anxiously awaiting the reviews, though. I'm going to make a special effort to go find a computer running IE so I can see this. Hope someone finds it useful.
