Chuck Todd handicaps Minnesota

Posted at 10:25 AM on November 2, 2008 by Tom Scheck

NBC's Chuck Todd offers this analysis of Minnesota in his state by state look:

Minnesota: Forget the presidential race, there's no better campaign for political junkies like myself than the nutty three-way Senate race between Norm Coleman, Al Franken and ex-Sen. Dean Barkley (remember, Jesse Ventura appointed Barkley to the Senate for the remaining days of the late Paul Wellstone's term). It's a crazy race; I think there's even a five percent chance the third party candidate wins. That said, I guess Franken is the very slight favorite. It's been a roller-coaster. A Franken win would be the ultimate culmination of what's been the convergence of everyday politics and satire. I can't wait to see how Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and the "SNL" folks deal with a Sen. Franken. Tip: Democrats could pick up two more House seats, including suddenly vulnerable Michelle Bachmann's seat and another open seat.

There should be some fireworks tonight in the final U.S. Senate debate. Tune in to MPR at 7 to listen.

Why, fireworks, you ask? GOP Sen. Norm Coleman tries to turn a negative into a positive by saying Democrat Al Franken and his DFL allies are behind the Texas lawsuit that alleges a Coleman donor funneled money to Coleman. Coleman is running an ad ripping Franken. Franken says the charges are ridiculous. MPR, the Pi Press, the Star Tribune and AP have stories.

DFL Party Chair Brian Melendez calls Coleman a "lying sack of crap." He later said he regrets saying it.

Franken and Coleman are neck and neck in the latest Star Tribune poll.

Roll Call says the DSCC and the NRSC are spending in record numbers in the state.

Rothenberg

Stu Rothenberg calls the Senate race a toss-up.

He says the 6th and 3rd are toss-up/tilt Democratic.

2008 Race for President

Barack Obama is up double digits in the latest Star Tribune poll.

Obama and John McCain are campaigning on Bush turf.

McCain appears on SNL.

Vice-President Dick Cheney endorses McCain.

Obama says he didn't know his aunt's illegal status.

Thousands of McCain volunteers flock to PA.

A St. Olaf professor steals John McCain lawn signs.

The Washington Post's David Broder calls it the best campaign ever.

6th District

With just three days to go before the election, GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann tours the St. Cloud V.A. Medical Center with the VA Secretary.

AP and the St. Croix Valley Press take a look at the race.

GOTV

The Pi Press has a look at the party's Get Out the Vote efforts.

DNC Chair Howard Dean held a rally in St. Cloud.

Voting

The Secretary of State's office says nearly two thirds of newly registered voters are under the age of 30.

There are concerns that a record turnout could stretch polling place workers.

Forum Communications says contrasts in the races will drive the large vote.

Politico says the GOP has offered scant evidence of voter fraud.

The stump speeches

As a warm up to tonight's U.S. Senate debate, I'm posting this weekend's stump speeches from GOP Sen. Norm Coleman and DFLer Al Franken (Note - I-P candidate Dean Barkley did campaign over the weekend but we didn't hear him make any stump speeches).

GOP Sen. Norm Coleman campaigned in the Twin Cities suburbs on Saturday. GOP Rep. John Kline joined him at several events including a campaign stop in Rosemount. Here's what they said:

Meanwhile, DFLer Al Franken was busy campaigning on Sunday with David Wellstone, the son of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone. The two spoke before the Operating Engineers, Local 49 in Minneapolis.

Second verse, same as the first (Hill and Rudy redux)

New York Senator Hillary Clinton will campaign for DFLer Al Franken in Duluth tomorrow. Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani will campaign for GOP Sen. Norm Coleman in St. Paul.

The two campaigned in Minnesota a few weeks ago.

Ad Time!

Posted at 8:55 PM on November 2, 2008 by Tom Scheck

Democrat Al Franken and GOP Sen. Norm Coleman released new ads today.

Franken released an ad to counter Coleman's ad that counters the DSCC's ad which features reporters yelling at Coleman to answer questions about a lawsuit which mentions Coleman.

Meanwhile...

Coleman released the two minute ad that I reported about earlier.
