Historical note:

Al Franken himself did a sketch about this kind of campaigning when he wrote for SNL. He performed it with his former partner in comedy, Tom Davis.

The sketch was prefaced by Franken and Davis announcing that they would no longer be voting for either of the major parties; they then ran a series of television political spots to show why.

In each of the political spots, Franken and Davis played opposition candidates doing increasingly negative ads about each other, each accusing the other of increasingly heinous crimes, until one of the two actually races into the other's ad and shoots him dead on camera.
