Goin' nuclear

Gov. Pawlenty campaigned in Wisconsin today on behalf of Republican John McCain. He was scheduled to attend two fundraisers in Madison and Milwaukee. He also talked energy policy at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

He held his news conference at UW's Mechanical Engineering Building, which has a nuclear reactor in the basement. Stories here and here on the event. Here's the audio from his news conference.

For the record, Obama's campaign said Obama supports increased drilling and building more nuclear reactors but is also focused on more renewable energy options like solar and wind.

Wisconsin Democratic Congressman David Obey also addressed the impact of McCain adding Pawlenty to the ticket. He said Wisconsin voters won't care if McCain picks the governor of their neighbor to the west.

"I don't think people are interested in the mileage between their community and the hometown of the nominee. I think they're more focused on the distance of the needs of average Americans and the politicians who are trying to get their votes."

During his stop in Wisconsin, Pawlenty again declined to talk about his VP chances and whether or not he's being vetted by McCain's campaign. We get to try again tomorrow since he has two events on his official schedule.

Respond with Truth:
Obama Supports Responsible Nuclear Power Read Obama's Energy plan (pg6):
"Safe and Secure Nuclear Energy. Nuclear power represents more than 70 percent of our noncarbon generated electricity. It is unlikely that we can meet our aggressive climate goals if we eliminate nuclear power as an option. However, before an expansion of nuclear power is considered, key issues must be addressed including: security of nuclear fuel and waste, waste storage, and proliferation."

Meanwhile, Michele Bachmann suggests that Stillwater would be a great place for a nuclear power plant. That's a pretty astounding revelation. And if not Stillwater, perhaps MPR could ask Bachmann where else in the 6th CD she thinks a nuclear power plant could go, and where the waste would be stored. I'm sure the voters in the district would be interested in the answer:

On nuclear energy Bachmann supports presumptive Republican presidential candidate Arizona Sen. John McCain’s proposal for building an additional 45 new nuclear power plants in the United States.

“It’s a great idea. And the sooner the better,” said Bachmann.

Indeed, Bachmann would “welcome” an additional nuclear power plant into the 6th District, she explained.

“Another nuclear power plant would bring down the price of people’s monthly energy bills,” said Bachmann.

She quipped that they could build a new nuclear plant in her backyard, arguing that nuclear energy is safe.
