Democrat Barack Obama is getting closer to the Democratic nomination. He'll speak tonight in St. Paul. AP and KARE have stories.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman says the "cards are not there" for Hillary Clinton and is preparing to back Obama.

Undecided superdelegates in the House and Senate are ready to back Obama which may give him the needed delegates to secure the nomination.

Insiders tell CNN that Clinton may hint to a VP nod during tonight's speech.

The Pi Press asks "What makes us so special?"

Meanwhile, Republican John McCain says he's the candidate for change. He is also fashioning his summer strategy.

The candidates spent $195 million on TV ads.

2008 Race for U.S. Senate

Republican state lawmakers point out some more Al Franken writings. The Pi Press, the National Journal and the Star Tribune have stories.

The Pi Press says Al Franken releases some endorsements that were in the bag earlier. DFL Rep. Ryan Winkler says he may be open to considering someone else.

KARE profiles Democrat Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.

2008 Race for Congress

The Wall Street Journal says the Blue Dog Democrats are gaining ground. El Tinklenberg, the DFL endorsed candidate in the 6th District is mentioned.

State Government

The Legislative ~~State~~ Auditor will weigh in this morning on the Attorney General.

A new chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court will be sworn in today.

A judge dismisses a challenge to per diem payments.

MinnPost has a story on the Taxpayers League legislative scorecard.

Congress

GOP Sen. Norm Coleman said he is frustrated by inaction on funding bills.

DFL Rep. Tim Walz holds an economic forum in Mankato.

The U.S. House will give belated birthday wishes to Minnesota. GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann is mentioned.

St. Paul's Bethesda Hospital is working to test returning war veterans for brain injuries. Bachmann is mentioned.

The Star Tribune wonders whether the corn boom is increasing the Dead Zone.

Pawlenty for VP Watch

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley tells The Hill that McCain has to do everything he can to win Florida (which means picking Charlie Crist). He said the Midwest is in play if McCain picks Pawlenty.

U.S. News and World Report has a timetable for picking a running mate. First half of August is a long time to speculate.

Hi Tom, just a minor correction, it's the Legislative Auditor that's reviewing Swanson's office, not the State Auditor.
