Politico: Romney the front-runner for McCain

Posted at 11:24 AM on June 30, 2008 by Tom Scheck (5 Comments)

Politico's Mike Allen says Mitt Romney it topping McCain's VP list. Allen says the downside is that the two lack "personal chemistry."Mostly because Romney can shake $50 million from the money trees. Allen says Former Ohio Congressman and White House Budget Director Rob Portman and South Dakota Senator John Thune are also in the top tier.

Allen says Gov. Tim Pawlenty is considered in the "second tier." The other interesting point in the article is that McCain will announce his choice quickly after Barack Obama picks his running mate. They hope it will mitigate and expected bounce from Obama's pick.

Meanwhile, The New York Daily News says Hillary Clinton may have made her way back on Obama's VP list.

I hope Mike Allen is right. We need economic help and quick at the national level. Social Security, healthcare, oil prices, etc., are causing me to lose sleep. A guitar-playing Huckabee or a lawyer-type Pawlenty won't help me sleep. I can play guitar on my stereo and we already have enough lawyers in Washington D.C. Yes, Mitt has a law degree but I'm convinced he only got it so he could communicate with lawyers while working/succeeding in the world of business...

LOL are you kidding., is the McCain campaign trying to sabotage McCains run for president. Have we all forgotten how many sound bites there is of Romney attacking McCain from the primarys????? I guess the vp slot is just for sale. The vp slot goes to the highest bidder?? Well we all know McCain is going to lose but does he really want to lose that badly. Romney will only energize mormans. I guess McCain will now win Utah., good strategy "McCain Camp" That is the most important state after all. In every poll taken Huckabee out preforms all other VP candidates, He energizes the Evangelical Base., Helps McCain in The south with another part of the base that is less then thrilled with McCain. Oh well it will be interesting watching the ads of Romney attacking McCain in the upcoming months. I believe McCains Campaign team are either morons or they are literally trying to sabotage his presidential hopes. If you want to get a sneak peak at the type of ads that the Democrats will be Playing with snippets of Romney talking bad about McCain just go to http://www.theveep.com

The tip-off that Politico is just a “promote Romney” piece is that it mentions EVERY NAME in the next two tiers of Veep prospects EXCEPT SARAH PALIN!!! — even names far more unlikely than Palin (since Romney camp knows Palin is the ONLY ONE who tops — I’ll say tops by far — Romney as McCain’s best pick).

Bottom line, Romney and Politico fear Palin most — as do the Dems and the MSM. (By the way, the Dems and MSM do not fear Romney the most — which says a lot.)

All the media buzz which will surround Palin -- essentially free to McCain -- will be worth millions and millions of dollars of PR (more money than Romney could provide anyway).

It appears that it’s all down to Palin or Romney, and team Romney fears Palin now has the best shot, so Romney camp is mounting a blogosphere-wide assault via Politico.

AOL, prime on-line pro-Obama/pro-Dem player, is now carrying the Politico piece promoting Romney buzz.

Clearly AOL wants McCain and the GOP to lose the general elction — hence they gladly promote Romney (no mention of Palin).

Also, CNN had Romney — kind of out of the blue — attacking Obama. Again, CNN, wanting McCain and the GOP to lose, gladly promotes Romney (to attempt to avert the Palin threat).

Romney is a no brainer for the VP pick. There are so many positives to picking this guy that the logical person can easily see it. Palin can have her shot as Romney's VP in 2012 once Romney shows his stuff in Washington.
