Just the other day Bob Collins was asking me where fugitive-turned-perennial-candidate Jack Shepard is now that election year is coming up. Well, the Pioneer Press has found him, and he's running for president. I guess that's not really a lead story for the Daily Digest, but at least we know where he is.

So what is our lead story today? Rudy Giuliani visited Minneapolis yesterday to raise some money and make another appearance at a diner. MPR and others covered it. Bill Clinton will be here next week to raise money for his wife's campaign, but doesn't it seem like we haven't seen many other candidates lately?

One thing Giuliani said while he was here was that he too would have vetoed the SCHIP expansion bill. As just about everyone predicted, the override effort in the House yesterday failed, but both sides are likely to continue using it as a political issue.

And one day after Senators gave Michael Mukasey a warm welcome as they questioned him about being Attorney General, things got noticeably cooler over the issue of torture.

And speaking of the climate, both of Minnesota's Senators have signed onto a global warming bill sponsored by Sen. John Warner of Virginia and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

2008

Of all the money Al Franken has raised for his run for Senate $2,000 from Ben Stein has become an issue. It turns out the two are old friends.

And Minnesota Monitor and Daily Kos are talking about the latest Coleman fundraising letter.

KARE has a story about the Twin Cities getting ready for the GOP national convention.

State

With Gov. Pawlenty's trade delegation set to leave for India MPR's Martin Moylan has a good piece about what it's like to actually try to do business there.

And Fred De Sam Lazaro of TPT has some observations in the Star Tribune.

And the University of Minnesota has found another big donor for its new football stadium as reported by the Strib.

Finally

Did you have a rough week? How'd you like to be the president of France? Not only does he get divorced, but he also has to deal with a transit strike. C'est la guerre!

Maybe Monday we'll have a lead story.
