State senator sues God

Posted at 11:59 AM on September 18, 2007 by Bob Collins (5 Comments)

Attention, people of Nebraska! Evacuate your state immediately!

Or risk the wrath of God, who is being sued by a state senator who says God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants."

Apparently, I find from my Nebraska friends, Sen. Ernie Chambers has been doing this for years, and in this case he's protesting frivolous lawsuits.

Nice file photo. Chambers has a "halo". Those AP people have a good sense of humor.

Keep up the good work Bob. Long time no read. JZ

Isn't that something? I couldn't post the picture because we don't have a contract with AP for pictures, but what's cool is that's a picture taken in 2006, before the "God link" was established.

I guess that's a fan or something but I noticed the same thing when I first saw the photo on CNN.

Thanks for the nice note. I have a new gig coming at MPR (giving up the senior online editor stuff), so watch for more.

We should start guessing what Bob's new job at MPR will be... I have three guesses...

MFL Weekly Insider editor for the 2008 season

Our own Steve Hartman for MPR

Construction Manager for the brand new MPR "Eye in the Sky" airplane, due to be up in the air in 2011.

Actually, all of those -- well, except for #3 -- are accurate.

I'm going to do more writing/blogging, and I hope to pursue my belief that if you give me six questions to ask you, I'll find something about you others will find interesting and want to read about.

This is definitely one of those stories that has a deeper, serious side, but that superficially just sounds like a disposable and humorous sound bite (translation: the news folks love it). To wit: Jay Leno had a couple cracks last night at Chambers' expense. I paraphrase:

1) "Why would God do anything about those natural disasters? He hasn't even done anything about the Notre Dame football team."

2) "What would happen if it went to court? He [God] couldn't get a lawyer -- He's up in Heaven."

Heh heh.

Interesting thought experiment: Ernie Chambers. Kathy Griffin. Locked room. Small locked room. Together.

Go. JZ
