Merry Christmas to all. Mr. Scheck is off for the week celebrating the holidays.

As you might expect the day after Christmas is not the busiest news day of the year. But there is news both from the Legislature past and the legislature yet to come in today's Digest.

MPR has a piece about the upcoming debate on early childhood education funding.

The Star Tribune takes a look at the new child support law that passed last session.

The St. Cloud Times has a rundown of some issues important to central Minnesota.

Just about everybody has an obit of James Brown. The hardest working man in show business died early Christmas at age 73.

Frank Stanton has also died at age 98. He may not be as familiar to you as James Brown, but he had a huge impact on the media and the country as president of CBS during the network's glory days. Here's the Washington Post obit.

The Post also takes a look at Democrats likely efforts to restrain spending as they take control of Congress.

The New York Times has a piece on an effort by John McCain and Edward Kennedy to find support for an immigration bill.

And just to stay on the federal beat for a minute, NPR talked to some of the incoming committee chairs who will have a big say over Iraq policy. It was on Morning Edition today.

And the Detroit Free Press has a piece on a speech by one of Minnesota's new members of Congress, Keith Ellison. It looks like the first time Ellison has publicly defended his decision to use the Quran to take the oath in a ceremonial swearing-in.
