“My wife Laurie and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator Johnson and his family during this difficult time. I have the utmost respect for Tim Johnson and pray for his swift and complete recovery.”
From Amy Klobuchar:
“I’ve gotten to know Senator Johnson and his wife Barbara over the last two years. Senator Johnson is a leader not only for South Dakota but also for rural America. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Senator and his family.”

My distinguished critics probably expect me to use the announcement of a serious illness on a public affairs blog to “score cheap political points.”
Instead I will surprise them by extending my sincere sympathy to Senator Johnson and his family and wish him a healthful recovery from this very dangerous procedure. And I will extend those same sincere wishes to the tens of thousands of other victims of disease and accident who are also (even at this very moment) facing life-threatening surgery all around the world, but whose personal misfortune will never be reported by the media. We explain this by noting that the life-threatening illness of an influential politician, like that of a young child, is especially sad and therefore news-worthy.
