Notes from the RNC "strategy session"

Posted at 6:13 PM on August 4, 2006 by Tom Scheck

The RNC's site selection committee for the 2008 National Convention will visit the Twin Cities on August 13th. They plan on spending a day and a half touring the area. The Twin Cities are lobbying both the RNC and the Democratic National Committee for a 2008 convention.

The RNC is considering the Twin Cities, Tampa Bay, New York and Cleveland. The DNC is considering the Twin Cities, Denver and New York. Officials with the Twin Cities say they won't try to host both and will pull a bid once one party chooses Minneapolis/St. Paul.

RNC Chair Ken Mehlman says the RNC decided to host their summer strategy session in Bloomington because Minnesota is the only state that has competitive races for governor, the U.S. Senate and Congress.

Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty faces attorney general Mike Hatch, a DFLer, in the race for governor. Republican Congressman Mark Kennedy faces Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar, a DFLer, in the U.S. Senate race. Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District features DFLer Patty Wetterling and Republican Michele Bachmann.
