MN's Senate race heats up

Republican Congressman Mark Kennedy ramped up his criticism of his chief DFL opponent, Amy Klobuchar. MPR has a story here. Kennedy, who spoke at the Republican National Committee's strategy meeting in Bloomington, said Klobuchar is not being "authentic" with voters:

I run against somebody who says that she's a prosecutor although we haven't found one example of where she's actually prosecuted a case. I run against somebody who lambasts Washington as a city of the lobbyists, by the lobbyists for the lobbyists and yet was a registered lobbyist for twelve years.

Kennedy also criticized Klobuchar for not taking a clear stance regarding the war in Iraq. Klobuchar's campaign spokeswoman, Tara McGuinness said Kennedy is running away from his voting record, which is with President Bush nine out of ten times:

Congressman Kennedy has nothing to offer Minnesotans who are faced with rising gas prices, health care costs and college tuition and he has resorted to his desperate, classic negative campaign attacks.

University of Minnesota political science professor Larry Jacobs says he thinks the latest exchange between the candidates is a signal that the "official campaign" is beginning. He said voters should get ready for negative tv ads.

Of course, one good definition of a "negative ad" is an ad pointing out things about a candidate's positions that voters may not agree with.
