Republican Congressman Mark Kennedy has his second tv ad up and running. The thirty second ad shows Kennedy talking about how he supports the GOP on issues like taxes and spending but goes on to highlight his differences with the party. He also talks about his work with Democrats.
The ad is interesting because he continues the "independent theme" that was brought up in his first ad. As many of you know, Kennedy votes with President Bush about 90% of the time.
The independent theme is a trend among GOP candidates nationwide (see earlier daily digest post). Kennedy is running for Minnesota's open U.S. Senate seat.
It is weird that he insists he's independent. Every time he says that he is, you know the Democrats will trot out the 93% figure. It's like he's setting himself up to be smacked down.
And then the GOP complains that he's unfairly tied to Bush. Well, if he stopped pretending he wasn't a lock-step Republican maybe the Democrats would stop exposing the mistruth...
It seems like such a poor campaign strategy to be based on a proven mistruth.
Political makeovers are big with Republicans this year.
Michele Bachmann is doing the same thing with her ugly homophobic agenda. Her legislative report--interestingly, it's sent from her State Senate Re-Election Committee when she's running for Congress--makes no mention of Bachmann's anti-gay-marriage campaign, her Number One issue. It also makes no mention of the rest of her extremist agenda, such as teaching creationism in schools (she claims to have raised science standards in schools).
Now, how long will Michele Bachmann keep calling herself a "tax litigation attorney" when she isn't even authorized to practice law in Minnesota?
He cherry picked the Pension vote from a procedural motion to appoint conferees 3 months after the bill passed the House. In that vote in December, he voted lock step with the GOP and the President.

But the ad itself I thought was very will done, a Senatorial presentation by the candidate and clearly states he is a Republican without ever using the word 'independent.
