Kelley is in for ag

Posted at 3:48 PM on July 18, 2006 by Tom Scheck (15 Comments)

Capitolbrewhaha reported it first and Kelley's aide confirmed it (although he hasn't filed the official paperwork and the clock is ticking).

The aide also said DFL Rep. Ron Latz will run for Kelley's now open seat and there are several DFLers who will run for the now open house seat. My how the dominoes fall!

and I guess Mike Freiberg, committee administartor for Sen Leroy Stumpf is expected to be one those running for the Latz seat.

Mike Freiberg is also on the Golden Valley City Council. He would do a great job!

Actually, we broke this story precisely 8 minutes before Capitolbrewhaha.

Ryan Winkler from Golden Valley is in the 44B race as well. Ted Mondale is his campaign chair.

Tom, I just thought you would want your post to be accurate.

Nice snark - and hey, the same back at you.

My money is on Jorge Saavedra for Ron Latz's seat. Write it down.

Yeah I was lollygaggin' around on other sites when my source let me know Steve was in. Then I posted it, and then saw MN Publius' post. I posted it separetely from MN Publius, and with out knowledge of their post, but its true, they did get the scoop. That's why my post says "You heard it here first, or AT LEAST SECOND..." I'm guessing Tom learned of the news from me, so credited me. No disrespect meant towards MN Publius.

RememberMe, Jorge does not live in district 44B so he couldn't file for that seat. Four DFL'ers filed. Ann Thomas -- who ran for SLP city council in 2005, Mike Freiberg -- who is on Golden Valley city council, Scott Grayson -- who was on Golden Valley city council for 1 term , and Ryan Winkler -- from Golden Valley. John Palmatier -- the Republican candidate, ran against Latz in 2004. Just thought I'd fill in the blanks here.

As a resident of St. Louis Park, and parent of children who attend the public schools, I have witnessed the dedicated involvement of Ann Thomas. She has proven herself to be a tireless advocate for the children of our area. Ann has been involved in our community for over thirty years, while thirty is also the age of Ryan Winkler. I think it is time to once again elect a woman to the Minnesota state legislature in Senate District 44.

Matt Klaber(who posted as MK above) is the campaign manager of the Ryan Winkler campaign, and he doesn't live in the district. It looks like he was a recent state convention delegate from Nicollet County(I am not sure where Nicollet County is, all I do know is that this is Hennepin and not Nicollet). He mentions in his above post that Ted Mondale is the chair of Ryan Winklers campaign, but doesn't tell you that Ted Mondale doesn't live in the district either. Does anybody that actually lives in district 44b support this Ryan Winkler guy?

In response to James' post above:

Matt Klaber...doesn't live in the district.

You're right, as a college student I am registered to vote at home in North Mankato.
It looks like he was a recent state convention delegate from Nicollet County(I am not sure where Nicollet County is, all I do know is that this is Hennepin and not Nicollet).

Clearly this indeed all you know. I'm also a DFL State Director.
He mentions in his above post that Ted Mondale is the chair of Ryan Winklers campaign, but doesn't tell you that Ted Mondale doesn't live in the district either.

You're right, and I don't tell you that he is the former senator from the area, prior to redistricting.
Does anybody that actually lives in district 44b support this Ryan Winkler guy?

James, you know as well as I that Commissioner Gail Dorfman, Rep. Ron Latz, Council members Sue Sanger, Paul Omodt and Mike Freiberg all live in the district, and support this Ryan Winkler guy.
ryan winkler has been a resident of this district for 9 months

Not sure where you get your information, but this is clearly incorrect. Prior to purchasing a home a year ago in Golden Valley, Ryan and his wife owned a home on Raleigh Ave in St. Louis Park. This information can easily be confirmed with Hennepin County, which as you state, is the county 44B is in. Clever.

Matt Klaber,

I admire the fact that you admit Ryan Winkler moved into the district just to run for this office and that the very few people who have endorsed him don't even live in the district.

With this information confirmed by the Ryan Winkler campaign, I urge all voters in House district 44B to vote for either Scott Grayson or Ann Thomas. These are individuals who care about our district and its residents, and are not just merely focused on their own political careers like Ryan Winkler.

James: What is it with you and facts? Where in his entry did MK "admit" that Ryan Winkler moved into the district just to run for office? I think he's lived in Golden Valley for over a year and he lived in St Louis Park prior to that. Sue Sanger and Paul Omodnt, SLP city counsel members have endorsed him as well. And anyways... who cares???

As a voter, I want two things from my elected representative 1) I want them to share my values and priorities and 2) I want to know that they are competent and knowledgeable so that they will be effective. Ryan Winkler has demonstrated a long standing commitment to the DFL party, and he clearly articulates the values and issues I care about. Perhaps that's also true about the other two candidates (although I really don't see a true commitment to the DFL party from the other two). That brings us to the competence and knowledge issue. Ryan Winkler clearly demonstrates a deep knowledge of the issues and can voice a point of view and action plan. I truely don't see this from the other two candidates.

I was at the central committee meeting where the endorsement was given (as a visitor - no voting rights) and no implication was made that the general voter is less than intelligent. The argument was made that this group of people was in a position to have to make an informed decision for endorsement, and that they should do so.

Listening to the three candidates at this meeting and in watching the recent debate, it was clear to me that Ryan Winkler has a better grasp on policy issues. Scott and Ann's answers seem to be more fluff than substance. This is not an election to a position to decide to put in a new bike path or hold a city arts festival. I want my elected representative to be able to push for real change and get this state back on track, and I firmly believe that Ryan Winkler is the person to do this. All of these other red herring non-issues seem very meaningless to me.
