Politics in Minnesota is reporting the fundraiser for State Representative Keith Ellison will occur later this week:
Several weeks ago, we wrote that we thought that Fifth District Congressional candidate Rep. Keith Ellison's (DFL-Minneapolis) campaign was over. We still maintain that Ellison's candidacy has been damage beyond repair and that Democrats won't say that but they'll vote that way in the primary. However, worth noting is that later this week, the following Democrats are hosting a fundraiser for Ellison: former Vice President Walter Mondale, Sylvia and Sam Kaplan, former Minneapolis Mayor Don Fraser and his wife, Arvonne Fraser, and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and his wife, Megan O'Hara.
Ellison is one of several DFLers running in the September primary. Some of the other DFL candidates include former party Chair Mike Erlandson, former state senator Ember Reichgott Junge and Minneapolis City Council member Paul Ostrow. Republican Alan Fine, Independence Party candidate Tammy Lee and Green Party candidate Jay Pond are also running.
I don't know why state Republicans (Sarah Janacek among them) are so vehemently opposed to Keith Ellison. Even though the GOP doesn't have a prayer in this House race, they don't pass up any opportunities to say something negative about him. It's pretty surprising.
What's the motive? Did he run over Sviggum's dog or something?
So the Republicans should just lay down where a horrifyingly bad candidate becomes one of the 537 most important people in Washington? In no way does Keith Ellison deserve to be elected to congress. In no way has he demonstrated enough respect for law to be in position to be elected to congress, and there is no way he would be an effective congressman, whether it is to bring forth good or bad legislation.
Why are you begging the opposition to lay down and let Keith Ellison walk all over them?
I would highly encourage people to not throw their hard-earned money away with attending this fundraising event. Please donate to the American Red Cross as experts are predicting another bad hurricane season or the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the charity of your choice. Please, please do not give money to a self-described separtist and a person that thinks he is above the law he has sworn to uphold. And do you really think he is going to totally stand with Israel. You know he won't when it really counts.
Keith Ellison is among the finest candidates for the US congress anywhere in the US.
It is no wonder that he is the subject of attacks from vested interests everywhere, including within the DFL and GOP. He takes seriously his responsibility to represent the actual people who make up his consitutuency over the special interests and donors. He has tirelessly worked for economic justice for those who lack the means to demand the representation they deserve.
Minneapolis is one of the last bastions of liberalism in this once great nation, and Keith Ellison's record as a legislator and as a political activist shows that he will carry on in this tradition.
Meridith says "And do you really think he is going to totally stand with Israel. You know he won't when it really counts."
That seems to be a point in his favor. The job of the Congress is to totally stand with the US. Israel is not part of the US. Frankly, the current trend of backing Israel without question is causing more problems for the US than it is solving. It is far past time for Washington to reevaluate this special relationship. What were some Dems proposing this week, $30 million for Lebanese refugees and another $100 million for Israeli weapons. In whose mind does this make sense? Are we now going to both subsidize the Israeli destruction of their neighbors and the reconstruction of those areas? It is absolutely ludicrous.
"So the Republicans should just lay down where a horrifyingly bad candidate becomes one of the 537 most important people in Washington?"
Oh, please. Most administrative assistants have more clout in Washington than members of Congress.
Seriously, though, they do. The best job in DC is "scheduler."
