Laura McCallum reports she talked to DFL candidate Amy Klobuchar this morning for a piece she's working on about primaries. Laura asked her about her campaign "forcibly detaining" the GOP crew yesterday. According to Laura, "she said it wasn't her campaign, it was the Humphrey Institute folks. She said she told her campaign manager to give the Kennedy folks the tape. She doesn't have a problem with them having it."
Interesting. Here is how the Humphrey Institute responded to Andy from KVM when he asked about the incident:
"Hi Andy - thank you for your feedback. The Klobuchar campaign asked there be no unauthorized video or audio recording of the event and we requested their wishes. If you’re interested in filming future appearances you should probably contact their campaign in advance. In inviting these political candidates, we work to provide a non-partisan or bi-partisan atmosphere that allows them to put their guard down as much as possible. As you can imagine, within these situations there may be some who choose to record appearances for negative reasons and I’m sure that’s why they made that decision." (source: www.kennedyvmachine.com).
Sounds like there is a lot of blame being thrown around - Klobuchar says it's the Humphrey Institute's issue and the Humphrey Institute says it was a Klobuchar campaign issue. Sigh.
This is just more politics as usual for the DFL.
...or... could they both be right? i.e. Klobuchar campaign said, in advance, 'Please no unauthorized audio/video recording' - a request honored by the Humphrey institute. Though maybe honored a little too forcefully? Of course, one has to wonder, was it announced in advance that people should not record the event, but Kennedy staffers/interns did anyway? I don't know much about the whole situation, having only learned of it here, but it seems entirely possible that some people may be trying to make political hay out of an innocent mistake.
this all coming from the party who wouldn't let liberal bloggers into their convention....
