DFL confab - Day 2

Posted at 10:01 AM on June 10, 2006 by Bob Collins (4 Comments)

I'm not at the DFL convention, it's my day off, I'm trying really hard to be motivated to sit inside and blog while listening, even though I have lots of stuff to do around the house, and -- besides -- there are some really good bloggers who are at the convention (see previous entries), so what more can I add other than an occasional picture and an occasion "snarky" (I never really heard of that word until KvM started calling me that everytime they read something they don't like on Polinaut and can't come up with anything else. Seriously, I love you guys, whoever you are since you keep canceling lunch plans. I think one of them is supposed to keep me busy while the others break into my house looking for political campaign contribution receipts, and they just haven't gotten their own schedules together yet. Or maybe not. But I digress.) comment, and maybe an occasional bit of sound (although that'll be hard to pull off from the confines of this ridiculously cluttered home that I should be cleaning today). I guess we'll just have to see.

Let's start off with some pictures that Zdechlik and Scheck have sent me.

Steve Kelley arrives a the convention hall. Father's Day must be fun at Casa Kelley. "Oh, how nice! A tie."

I really don't know who this is but I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest it's a Mike Hatch supporter speaking to Mike Hatch supporters. Why? I really don't know. Maybe to convince them that yellow is coming back? I also have no idea how big "Nurses for Hatch" is but if I'm Becky Lourey or Steve Kelley, I suddenly want to be sure I'm living a healthy lifestyle.

Yesterday, one of those people who was nominated for Senate made a whole speech about how he'd prove that America can run on car engines powered by water. I wonder where he is today (probably broken down by the side of the road), because maybe he has some tips for the Lourey windpower strategy.

You folks know these are all jokes, right? It's a good thing I was on vacation last week. I couldn't do this with another political party. The candidate flaks would be on the phone with the boss ... again. But DFLers get humor; even when it's not funny.

Let's continue and see what other goodies have arrived in the INBOX.

"Shoot, those Hatch people have nifty yellow shirts, the Lourey people have a big pinwheel, and all I've got is this stinkin' sign." You know, from behind, this guy looks like Tim Pawenty.

feingold_large.jpg

I don't really follow Russ Feingold's career much, or at least what people say about him, so maybe I'm not the first to notice that he and Adam Arkin appear to have been separated at birth.

Well, geez, Russ Feingold gives the keynote speech. I guess that's your clue to go listen to Eichten and his gang, or go read other bloggers because I got nuthin', and it looks like the fun has started inside. Funny and Feingold don't go in the same sentence, anyway.

I gotta go clean the bathrooms and check the locks on the doors and windows anyway. I'll be back later for the afternoon show. Maybe.

Here's your link to the podium audio. And here's your link to the live news stream, on which Eichten's show can be heard. You have a choice. Pretty cool, huh? 1-800-227-2811. Or just go here. 'Cuz it didn't happen by accident, and there's lots of folks who'd rather spend the money elsewhere than political stuff.

4:19 p.m. update -- More pictures at bottom. (end)

Scroll down for links to live feeds and pictures, but here's some audio from today's happenings at the DFL convention in Rochester.

Russ Feingold's keynote address

Steve Kelley's speech

Becky Lourey's speech

Mike Hatch's speech

Tim Baylor's (Lt. Gov candidate for Lourey) speech

Thanks to Phil Picardi, who is the hardest working person at MPR today, for isolating these.

Here's a picture of Hatch giving his speech.

Mark Dayton speaks to the delegates.

After their speeches, the candidates did the usual quesiton-and-answer thing. I don't know who the moderator of the deal was but he sure looks like Penn Gillette. I assume it's not Penn Gillette.

Becky Lourey announces she's dropping out of the endorsement battle. She'll run in the primary in September.

Mike Hatch moves in for the kill.

These photos, by the way, are courtesy of MPR reporters Tom Scheck and Mark Zdechlik who are reporting live on the MPR broadcast while snapping some pictures. They never forget their online Polinaut pal.

That's Tom Scheck who just spent 5 months working early mornings and late nights to cover the Legislature, and has spent the last two weekends working late nights and early mornings covering the political conventions. Oh yeah, Mike Hatch won the endorsement; that's him on the left talking on that newfangled radio thing.
