7th District Rep. Collin Peterson among the more interesting politicians in Minnesota. The DFL is glad to have his seat, but generally ignores him. At the national conventions, whenever the Minnesota delegation is having a breakfast meeting and someone comes in to whip them up into a frenzy over all the DFLers they're going to put in Congress (or re-elect), I've never heard a single person utter Peterson's name and it's too glaring an ommission to be anything but intentional. I've always found 7th District Rep.
The media -- at least in the Twin Cities -- hardly ever talks to him. So maybe he's the one politician who really doesn't get fair shake from the media and, ironically, he's the one politician who's not complaining about it.
Anyway, I say that to pass along that I've just finished up putting a series of audio files corresponding to issues in the 7th District, on Peterson's page in the Campaign 2006 section.
Credit goes to MPR reporter Dan Gunderson in Moorhead.
We're not about to evict Colin from our big tent, but we sure wish he'd start voting like a Democrat, never mind like a DFLer. Colin has an 11% Human Rights Campaign rating. That's lower than all the Democratic Congressmembers and Senators in neighboring North and South Dakota. That's an even lower rating than some Republican's!
As if Colin's voting record on gay issues isn't bad enough, he's even signed on as a sponsor of the Republican's anti-marriage constitutional amendment. Perplexed by such strange behavior by an endorsee of the DFL, I attempted to querry Colin as to why he was so out of step with his party and district on gay issues. In fact, at least four of us gay folk and friends tried to talk to Colin at the 7th district convention saturday.
I swear, but Colin must have gaydar! Now people say I look like the middle aged grandmotherly type, but I stood right next to Colin several times and he never once said hello. Meanwhile, the whole parade of DFL candidates passed by during the long afternoon and several said hello even multiple times. Finally I got a few words with Colin and asked why he had cosponsored the Republican's anti-marriage constitutional amendment. Colin couldn't give me a reason- nothing. Incredible- a Congressmember, worse yet a DFLer, co-sponsors a bill for no reason!
