Grandma's Marathon bans headphones

Posted at 4:59 PM on April 4, 2007 by Bill Wareham

Another curiousity from the Associated Press:

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - Remember the energy bars, but leave the
iPod at home - for those people signed up for Grandma's Marathon
this summer.

The annual marathon in Duluth has been required to adopt a
national running rule prohibiting the use of headphones and other
music-playing devices, race officials announced Wednesday.

USA Track and Field recently enacted that ban for all sanctioned
running events to increase participant safety. That means runners
entered in Grandma's Marathon, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon or
any other official race must comply. Violators will be
disqualified.

"The best advice we can offer to anyone hoping to avoid any
inconvenience is simply to not bring headphones with them on race
day," executive director Scott Keenan said.
