Blame it on Chevy Chase

Posted at 10:43 AM on December 28, 2006 by Melanie Sommer

That's what former NBC correspondent Richard Valeriani does in his blog at the Huffington Post. Valeriani says Gerald Ford would have won the 1976 election against Jimmy Carter, if it hadn't been for Chevy Chase's "portrayal of Ford on Saturday Night Live as a bumbling, fumbling clown."

I remember watching SNL in 1976, and those bits were hilarious. I've been reading a lot of the Ford retrospective pieces, and apparently the president himself was rather amused. I wonder if Mr. Valeriani gives SNL too much credit; after all, it was a very new show at the time and had a very young audience. Perhaps the Nixon pardon, the Mayaguez, etc. were more valid reasons.

By the way, I also remember wearing a WIN (Whip Inflation Now) button at the time, for some reason...
