Live trivia: The weekly Quiz

I'm trying something new this week just for fun. Cover It Live has developed a trivia module for its product. Open it below and begin answering questions. Log-in with your Facebook or Twitter account if you want to compete with other quiz takers.

At 2 p.m., I'll start asking questions. Play along live or come back later and answer them all at once. You will be able to find out whether you're correct (or not) immediately, but you can only answer once.

Most questions are worth one point but a few of the VERY hard ones are worth up to five. If you answer incorrectly, you'll lose points, so you'll have to decide for yourself whether it's worth the risk.

I'll keep the chat open if you'd like to discuss the week's news live, and also to allow people through the weekend to take the quiz.

The weekly News Cut Quiz

Last week's high score was 13, posted by Kevin Watterson, Director of Public Affairs for the Minnesota House Republican Caucus. It might well be the high point for Republicans in Minnesota this week. His prize is that he will now be followed by Midmorning host Kerri Miller on her new Twitter account. We''re happy for both of them.

I don't have a prize this week. Sorry. Maybe we can get people to donate prizes -- maybe some raw milk or something.

We've got prizes! Sort of. My cubicle neighbor, Kerri Miller -- that's right, the one who crinkles her nose and talks funny when she says blogger -- is now on Twitter. I can get you a deal. Finish with the best score in this week's quiz (you'll have to enter it in the comments section and be honest, which has never been a problem for News Cut commenters before), and she's agreed to follow you. Quiz: Too clever for easy answers

I signed an autograph for someone at the MPR Open House last Sunday and, because I'm so very clever, I wrote "The answer to question number 9 is (A)." At least I think I wrote "A." I might have written "C." Somewhere out there, someone thinks they've gotten an easy answer. And maybe they have. Or maybe they haven't. As it turns out, we don't do the A,B,C thing, anyway. So whoever has been waiting for the quiz, with my autograph in one hand and your finger on the keyboard in the other, the correct answer to question #9 is the first one.

Unless of course you've already sold the darned thing on E*Bay.

These are the interns in MPR's Digital Media Department, learning a valuable lesson in only their second week on the job: It's harder to look pensive than it is to be pensive. But it's a skill that must be mastered if one is to rise in the American workplace.

Debunking the myth that we pile onto interns, those jobs we don't like doing ourselves, we have given to Rachel Wilensky and David McVeety (students at St. Paul Academy) the responsibility of putting together this week's News Cut Quiz. We have given them only this guidance: "Make it hard, don't make it impossible, and make people assume the fetal position when they're done with it."

Let's see how they did this week by seeing how you do.

Whose year was it?

Over the next few hours, as in the last few days, we are likely to be told -- again -- that 2008 is a year to forget. I recognize the news has been bad -- the news is always bad -- and many people are hurting. But whose year are we talking about? If I say to you, "2008," what do you think of? The election? The recount? The economy?

Those may be events in our lives, but are they our lives? Are they our years? I have a hard time saying "2008 was a bad year" to someone who, for example, watched their kid walk across a stage to get his or her high school diploma this year? Or the person whose biopsy showed the tumor was benign.

But we don't do news stories about high school graduations or medical test results for people who aren't from Hollywood. And yet, that's the way we live our lives. Personally. Individually. Quietly. It stands to reason that it's not up to people like us to review and define 2008; it's up to you.

As the old question goes: How was it for you?

The odds are someone has mailed you this Muppets video in celebration of the 4th. While watching it, I tried to remember the entire preamble to the Constitution, which we were required to memorize in school. Sadly, I couldn't do any better than the Muppet did.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Two things have never happened in this great country. (1) No team has ever won an NBA championship after being down three games to none and (2) Nobody (as far as we know) has ever received a perfect score on the News Cut Quiz.
