While we await someone to finally say "got you," we have no choice but to believe this St. Louis Post-Dispatch story, which goes with this picture from Golfmanna.com. Also, we plan to stay off golf courses.

It's based on a story told by Lori Mihal of the website.

My husband, Mark Mihal, co-founder of golfmanna, went out to play a familiar course in Waterloo, Ill., with his regular Friday foursome. He was having a great round and lots of laughs with his buddies. They were in the fairway on No. 14; Mark had already hit his second shot when he went to check out the distance for his playing partner, Mike Peters, who was getting ready to hit. Mike had his back to Mark and when he turned to say something to him, Mark was gone.

The Post-Dispatch says sinkholes are common in that area of Illinois, near St. Louis.

Would a sinkhole be considered an "outside agency" under the rules of golf?

I'm not a very good golfer, but I always replace my divots.

Just another reason to stay in Minnesota.
I do not recall hearing of a sinkhole anywhere around here.

The karst region of Minnesota -- mostly southeast Minnesota -- is full of sinkholes and is quite susceptible to them. I wrote about it a little last week when the man and his bed fell into the sinkhole in Florida.
